Produced by Wit Studio (Attack on Titan Seasons 1-3, Vinland Saga), the Spy x Family anime is inspired by the popular action comedy manga of the same name by Tatsuya Endo. The series follows Agent Twilight, an elite spy working to maintain peace between his homeland, Westalis, and the neighboring country, Ostania. As part of a new mission codenamed Operation Strix, Twilight takes on the alias Loid Forger and marries Yor Briar, a young woman who secretly lives a double life as an assassin. He also adopts Anya Forger, a five-year-old girl with telepathic abilities who, unbeknownst to him, knows about his secret identity. To get close to an elusive Ostanian politician, Twilight enrolls Anya in Eden Academy and encourages her to become one of the school's top students. However, Anya's attempts to help Loid with his spy missions often lead to unexpected mishaps.
Spy x Family Code: White is a standalone adventure that takes place after Yor is introduced to the series. The story begins when Loid decides to help Anya win the school cooking competition by traveling abroad to track down the principal's favorite recipe. While on a “vacation” together, Anya discovers a special dessert that is linked to a dangerous conspiracy. After opening the box of dessert, Anya accidentally becomes the main target and Loid and Yor must work together to save her and protect world peace. The series has an original script by Ichiro Okouchi, who was also the main writer for Spy x Family Season 2.
The first Spy x Family film was an exceptional box office hit in Japan. In its first 24 days in theaters, it grossed over 4.85 billion yen (at the time, equivalent to $33.26 million). Notably, it remained the highest-grossing film for four consecutive weeks, despite competing with popular contenders like Godzilla Minus One and Detective Conan vs. Kaito Kid. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 94% critics rating and a 98% audience rating (or “Popcornmeter”).
Spy x Family Season 1-2 is now available to stream on Crunchyroll. The original Spy x Family manga is available in English on VIZ Media.
