Shihei Lin, the famous editor of Spy x Family and Chainsaw Man in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, was hospitalized after suffering a brain hemorrhage earlier this week.
On November 7, 2023, Lin revealed that he had been hospitalized since November 5 following the incident. The article translated through X has the content: “[Business Message]: Since Sunday the 5th, I have been hospitalized due to sudden illness. It seemed like a blood vessel in my brain, deep behind my right eye, had suddenly burst. (I understand this is an idiopathic condition of unknown cause). It was my first time riding an ambulance. I sincerely apologize for the delayed response to emails and other communications. (I notified those in urgent need but apologize to those I was unable to contact). Thanks to the excellent meticulous initial treatment by medical professionals; There seem to be no special side effects, and my condition is improving with medication and fluids.”
Although Lin appears to be back in business mode, he said he’s taking things slow for now and moving on: “I’ve been very lucky. I’m scheduled to be discharged from the hospital this weekend. I think my busy and stressful schedule has to do with it.” I’m part of a cause so I plan to control things to get a little more profit! I plan to take advantage and ask for help from people near me. For those I have to reschedule meetings and meals eat with me, I will contact you from this weekend onwards to rebook dates for next week onwards. Focusing on recovery, I will move forward slowly. By all means, thank you for your understanding!!”
Lin is one of the best manga editors in Japan. In CBR’s previous coverage of Lin, it was learned that he has managed more than 100 titles, including Yuji Kaku’s Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku and Kazue Kato’s Blue Exorcist. Both went on to have successful anime adaptations, with Blue Exorcist: Shimane Illuminati Arc scheduled to premiere in January 2024. Lin also oversaw the best-selling Shonen Jump Spy x Family, Dandandan and Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man, along with some insight into his process. below.
“It looks like a villain,” Lin told Fujimoto, to which Fujimoto responded, “He also has a human form and will become cooler.” Lin discussed it with Fujimoto, used his ideas and came up with suggestions for what has now become a global phenomenon in Chainsaw Man. The editor shared a similar anecdote regarding one of Jump’s most promising titles, Dandandan. Creator Yukinobu Tatsu’s original idea was to “take a Mad Max-like car chase and combine Speed with it.” It is speculated that a Dandandan anime could be announced soon, especially with Jump Festa approaching, which usually witnesses important reveals.
Lin’s hospitalization, the cause of which is currently unknown, may speak to the state of those involved in the manga industry. My Hero Academia fans came to X earlier this year to plead with Horikoshi Kohei to consider his health. One Piece’s Eiichiro Oda previously revealed that he would be working from his hospital bed, and Oshi no Ko’s Aka Akasaka recently returned from a two-month hiatus due to health complications.
