The anime premiered on April 1 and aired twice in a row over the course of a year. Crunchyroll is streaming the anime as it airs and is also streaming the English dub.
The anime is a brand new series that tells the story of Kraft Lawrence and his encounter with the wolf girl Holo. Jun Fukuyama is back as Kraft Lawrence and Ami Koshimizu is back as Holo. Mai Nakahara is also back in the series as Norah Arendt.
Takeo Takahashi returns to the series, this time as director. Hijiri Sanpei (Spice and Wolf II episode director) directed the anime at studio Passione. Kevin Penkin (Made in Abyss, Tower of God, The Rising of The Shield Hero) composed the music. ENISHIYA produced the series.
Yen Press publishes the novels in English and describes the series:
The life of a traveling merchant is a lonely one, a fact Kraft Lawrence knows well. Wandering from town to town with only his horse, cart, and whatever comes his way, the peddler has settled into his routine quite well—that is, until the night Lawrence finds a wolf goddess sleeping in his cart. Taking the form of a charming girl with wolf ears and tail, Holo has grown tired of harvesting the countryside and makes a deal with the merchant to lend him the cunning “Holo the Wisewolf” to increase his profits in exchange for taking her along on his travels. What kind of businessman could refuse such an offer? However, Lawrence soon learns that having an ancient goddess as a companion can be a mixed blessing. Will this wolf girl turn out to be too wild to tame?
Hasekura launched the Spice and Wolf light novel series with illustrations by Jū Ayakura in 2006. The series went on hiatus after volume 17 in 2011 and returned with volume 18 in 2016. The 24th and most recent volume was published in January 2023. Yen Press published the 24th light novel in North America in August 2023, and is also publishing a manga adaptation. Hasekura began a spin-off series, Wolf & Parchment: New Theory Spice & Wolf, in April 2016. Yen Press is also releasing the spin-off series in English, as well as its manga adaptation.
The novel also inspired two other works. The television anime seasons were directed by Takeo Takahashi and written by Naruhisa Arakawa. The first season aired in Japan from January to March 2008, and the second season (Spice and Wolf II) from July to September 2009. Funimation released both seasons on home video.
A virtual reality anime adaptation followed the television anime and premiered in June 2019 for Oculus Rift, HTC VIVE, and Oculus Go Edition. A sequel premiered in December 2020.
