Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf Episode 21 unravels the deep secrets of the village world that Lawrence is in. Let's recap what happened in episode 21.
Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf Episode 20 Summary
Today's episode provides a much-needed break from the intensity of the previous arc. Holo and Lawrence are on the road again, heading to their next destination in search of more information about Holo's homeland. The road ahead is not simple; to find the answers they seek, they must meet an Abbott who specializes in collecting stories about pagan gods.
Before they could meet Abbott, however, they had to first pass through the town of Tereo. Since Lawrence was unfamiliar with the area, they planned to gather information in the town of Enberch, where they were currently headed. This circuitous journey could be tedious, but it was their only option. Along the way, Lawrence was also looking to trade flour, both to locate the town and to earn some extra money.
The journey itself is peaceful, with stunning visuals highlighting the peacefulness of the route. But despite the serenity, there is an unsettling air about Tereo, which feels more like a village than a town. The townspeople aren’t particularly welcoming, and there’s something suspicious about the nun at the local church. It remains to be seen how Lawrence and Holo will deal with this situation and continue their journey.
One notable aspect of this episode is the deepening connection between Lawrence and Holo. After the recent events involving Amati, it’s clear that Lawrence has become more certain of his feelings and Holo is becoming more understanding. Their bond is stronger than ever and I can only hope that this new town doesn’t test it too much.
Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf Episode 20 Review and Recap
Today, we see our main characters mingling with the villagers while trying to get some information from them. Both Holo and Lawrence go to the local tavern and have a drink. There, they talk to the locals and find out that the village has not accepted the church even though they have built a church here. Instead, they secretly worship a snake god who is supposed to protect them.
This is why their relationship with the church was not friendly, especially the church in Enberch. The people of Enberch also tried to force Tereo to submit to their authority by imposing taxes on them. The condition was that if they wanted to worship their Serpent God, they had to pay a certain amount to Enberch, and that was how things were until Father Franz stepped in. So Father Franz was respected in the region but not his faith.
There is also the fact that the current head of the church, Elsa, denies helping our protagonists in any way. Even the village chief knows that Father Franz is looking for pagan stories but pretends to be ignorant. This makes Lawrence suspicious, and to discover more about the truth, he also seeks out the boy Miller, who often meets with Elsa, the current head of the church.
Seeing the problems with their stay in the village, Lawrence also confronts Holo about her beliefs. What is her true purpose in desperately searching for someone who knows about her homeland, which may have been destroyed long ago? Is she searching for the bear that destroyed it or her friends who may have survived?
Verdict
Today's episode brings up more mysteries about the village that Holo and Lawrence are currently in. The situation inside this village is unstable and it will be interesting to see what our main characters achieve here.
