A storyboard artist who worked on the 2021 live-action/animated hybrid film Space Jam: A New Legacy has revealed that the hybrid film originally featured the world of Pokémon.
Josh ‘Hat’ Lieberman, a storyboard artist who worked on the Space Jam sequel, uploaded footage of his cut Pokémon sequences for the film on YouTube. “This is a cutscene I wrote and scripted for Space Jam: A New Legacy,” Lieberman said. “In the movie, LeBron and Bugs visit various Warner Bros. IP worlds, like the DC universe or Westeros, to find crazy tunes that have fallen apart. At that time, I was the co-story director of the film and the producers asked me to do it.” came up with a fun scene where LeBron and Bugs enter the Pokémon world to capture Daffy, who has become a Pokémon trainer who uses Porky to fight and win money. Lieberman continued, “I’m a huge fan of Pokémon, Looney Tunes, and LeBron/basketball so this was a dream assignment. This sequence was shown to the Pokémon execs, who seemed to enjoy it, however eventually through rewrites and the natural evolution of a movie/story, the scene was cut. ”
In the theatrical version of Space Jam: A New Legacy, LeBron James and Bugs Bunny travel to the animated world of the DC Universe to recruit Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. In a setting very similar to Superman: The Animated Series, Daffy takes on the role of “Stunned Duck” in the 1956 Robert McKimson cartoon. Naturally, Daffy gets in over his head, and Bugs and James have to save him.

Space Jam’s Pokémon scene excited Nintendo but was ultimately deleted
Although Pokémon has a history with Warner Bros. Discovery is based on the anime that aired on Kids WB/Cartoon Network and the live-action Detective Pikachu movie, this deleted scene would be one of the few non-WB series to have a cameo in Space. Jam: A new legacy. Surprisingly, Nintendo not only allowed the cameo but was also said to be excited about it. Unfortunately for Pokémon fans, Nintendo’s tribute was a casualty among the constant rewrites for the troubled Space Jam sequel (which also almost starred Tony Hawk ).
Although Space Jam: A New Legacy has earned more than $160 million worldwide, the film was panned by critics when it opened in theaters and on Max on July 16, 2021. The theatrical future of the series Looney Tunes movies also seem difficult, as James Gunn – Coyote vs. John Cena-produced Acme has yet to be sold to another distributor after WB tried to drop the film. However, The Day the Earth Blow Up: A Looney Tunes Movie will be released in theaters this year.
