SHY is more of a magical girl anime than a superhero anime
The biggest takeaway from SHY episode #2 is that despite how it’s framed, this is still more of a magical girl anime than a superhero anime. Between Shy’s transformation sequences, various superpowers fueled by emotions, and how the conflict with Iko is resolved by Shy appealing to her emotions instead of fighting her, the series seems to have more in common with magical girl anime than superhero anime, as these elements are very common trademarks of the genre. Of course, it’s all still framed as a superhero story, but episode #2 makes it clear that labeling it as such would be too simplistic.
Of course, SHY leans more towards magical girl anime, which magically helps it give it its own identity. Over the past decade, there have been too many upcoming superhero shows and movies that often have similar themes and stories. SHY invites obvious comparisons to My Hero Academia, so taking such clear inspiration from magical girl anime gives it a unique twist that could help it stand out from its contemporaries. in both East and West. The drama has just begun, however, it will be great to see how it plays out. Shy develop that identity in the coming weeks.
