One of the management staff of the major Jump magazine told readers how to adapt their favorite manga into a live-action series like One Piece.
On December 28, 2023, Shonen Jump+ Deputy Editor-in-Chief Yuta Momiyama shared his discussion with a senior member in charge of foreign film adaptations via X (formerly Twitter). He revealed that there has been a sharp increase in the number of foreign studios adapting Shonen Jump works, as well as the number one way to discover these series is through MANGA Plus. “In recent years, there have been more and more negotiations with foreign countries to make films like One Piece, but when asked how they heard about the work, many locals said they were looking for it’s on MANGA Plus,” Momiyama said. “It seems that some works became a topic of discussion during negotiations for film adaptation even before they were adapted into anime or even before the episode was published in Japan.”

One Piece’s number 1 position on Manga Plus was replaced for the first time in Shueisha history
MANGA Plus’ rankings reveal some of the world’s most popular manga, with a clear new contender in One Piece falling to second place.
Momiyama continued: “I also often hear that people use MANGA Plus to read translations and publications from other countries and use them as references. There are many interesting manga available on Jump and Jump+. I want people in the publishing and film industry abroad to look for more on MANGA Plus.”
Momiyama’s words seem to be backed up by the growing number of manga on MANGA Plus that have been or will soon be adapted into live-action. Netflix’s critically acclaimed One Piece, the upcoming live-action My Hero Academia and Lionsgate’s Naruto can all be read on the platform. However, since these works were all greenlit before MANGA Plus’s official release in January 2019, fans can take Momiyama’s words as a teaser for more live-action adaptations. More action will be announced next year and beyond.

REPORT: Oshi no Ko is getting a live action movie and TV series
The Oshi no Ko anime series is said to have a live-action TV series and film, revealing its cast, plot, production visuals, and release date.
Finally, it’s not just overseas studios that are interested in live-action adaptations. The above report shows that domestic companies also have their own interests in creating live-action works of global interest. For example, Toei has begun production on a TV series and movie Oshi no Ko, and Robot Communications’ Yu Yu Hakusho has set records after its release on Netflix. Meanwhile, although it did not make it to the screen, Hayao Miyazaki’s directorial debut anime was adapted for the stage for the first time.
