Berserk’s Guts encounters Vincent van Gogh as he gazes into the Starry Night.
An Instagram account dedicated to the fan art of Kentaro Miura’s Berserk dark fantasy series recently shared a work by artist Hawta Mahmood. It shows Guts, The Black Swordsman, sitting on a large boat and looking up at the night sky — an image taken directly from a frame in Chapter 290, “A Howl From The Darkness.” However, unlike the source material, this illustration is in full color. It also features another sky view inspired by the iconic painting The Starry Night by post-impressionist icon Vincent van Gogh.
How artists create their own twist on iconic work
Mahmood also added some changes besides the vintage art-inspired backdrop. These changes include bringing the frame back to show the Dragonslayer in the right corner, which did not appear in the original panel. The Dragon Slayer is Guts’ legendary weapon, a sword larger than the average human and often described as “a pile of raw iron.” Instruments are synonymous with violent films and rarely leave the character.
The comments on the post are full of support for the unlikely crossover. Many users flooded the comments with appreciation, describing the fan art with phrases like “Perfect” and “Too good.” Some fans have even asked the page to send them artwork via direct message.
About Berserk by Kentaro Miura
Kentaro Miura’s Berserk follows the life of a mercenary named Guts as he roams the battlefields fighting for money. However, his satisfaction in fighting alone soon changes after encountering the charismatic Griffith, a mysterious leader who convinces him to join his group of mercenaries known as The Band of the Hawk. Ultimately, the line between friend/enemy and fiction/reality blurs as Guts encounters untold horrors and the world around him changes.
The series is one of the most beloved manga at publication, spanning 41 volumes and compiled by Dark Horse Publishing as a Premium Edition series. Unfortunately, Miura unexpectedly passed away in 2021, leaving an uncertain future for the series. Berserk has continued serialization since his death, with the author’s close friend Kouji Mori taking over. Miura’s final chapter — Chapter 364, “Tear of Morning Dew” — left the series in shock before Mori and Studio Gaga’s editorial team brought Berserk back with Chapter 365, “Lullaby of the Crescent Moon” in September. 6 year 2022.
Berserk’s 2016 anime adaptation is available on Crunchyroll, as is Berserk: The Golden Age Arc – Memorial Edition, a remake of the 2012 trilogy. The 1997 anime adaptation is not available for VOD at the time. Reply.
