The creators of the upcoming Scott Pilgrim Takes Off anime series have revealed that the show won’t turn out exactly as fans expect.
Executive producers Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the anime and noted that many elements went into creating the series. One of them was the live-action adaptation directed by Edgar Wright in 2010. Despite having an all-star cast, the film failed at the box office. However, the show has become a cult hit over the years, and to that end, many of them are making a comeback with the upcoming anime series.
Scott Pilgrim took off with a familiar voice
Some of the voice talent returning to reprise their characters includes Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman, Anna Kendrick, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh, Chris Evans, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman and Ellen Wong. However, in the interview, the duo noted that when they reunite the cast, the story will not play out the same as in the film or graphic novel. O’Malley is the author of a series of graphic novels and says that in the twenty years that have passed, a lot has changed. “I kept thinking, I have to tell the story of Scott Pilgrim in a world where the story of Scott Pilgrim has been told and people know it. I had to put a new coat of paint on it and damn— get around with it.”
As for Grabinski, he admitted that his goal was to exceed any expectations fans might have for the eight-episode series. He felt that if they just made the anime as a “beat-by-beat” recreation of what came before it would be “a waste of time.” Both also admitted that Scott Pilgrim’s fan base is not only large but also very loyal. They’ve proven themselves over the years and bought everything tied to the franchise, including the 2010 video game re-release.
While the duo didn’t reveal too many details about what changed in the plot, they did admit that Ramona Flowers’ job delivering packages for Amazon was changed to delivering Netflix DVDs. Furthermore, the time period will not change for the chapter. It would still be in the era of record stores and have a “retro” feel.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will premiere on Netflix on November 17.
