In a previous interview, O’Malley and Grabinski confirmed that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will explore the backstory and personalities of other characters beyond their relationship with Scott. Unlike the original source material, Ramona Flowers is expected to receive more character development in the anime. Additionally, O’Malley promises more scenes with his seven evil exes, which is something he regrets not doing in his graphic novel series.
O’Malley has previously clarified to fans that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will not be an exact adaptation of his beloved novel. “I don’t know who needs to hear this but… Those aren’t books,” he said. “I wrote them and you can read them anytime. This chapter is new in many ways. DO NOT expect a word-for-word remake. There will be many interesting surprises.”
