Sony Pictures has been developing the Spider-Man cinematic universe (SpiderVerse) since 2018 and focuses on superheroes or supervillains/antiheroes such as Venom, Morbius or Madame Web. Their latest blockbuster, Venom: The Last Dance – just released on October 25, is also making waves in theaters around the world. And next December, Sony will continue to expand its cinematic universe with the solo film project Kraven the Hunter.
Not only limited to the big screen, Sony Pictures also wants to “encroach” on the television segment, with a series of series released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The opening work for this series of projects is Spider-Noir, with the main role assigned to veteran actor Nicolas Cage. And recently, news site TMZ shared the first images of this movie, revealing the unique official appearance of the new Peter Parker, promising to be a breath of fresh air for Spider-Man fans in particular. and superhero movies in general.
In the original work, Spider-Noir is Peter B. Parker from the Earth-90214 universe, living in New York City in the 1930s. Basically, Spider-Noir's tragic story is quite similar. with other versions of Parker: His Uncle Ben was murdered by Vulture and Goblin for organizing a strike to demand justice for exploited workers in garment factories. The sudden death of his close uncle prompted Peter Parker to embark on a journey to seek justice. The fire of hatred in him burned even more fiercely when he worked for the Daily Bugle and discovered how miserable the workers in New York were under the threat of the Goblin.
During an investigation of an enemy, Peter went to the warehouse where Goblin and his henchmen were unloading a shipment of illegal antiques. A special antique, the Spider-Idol, accidentally broke and released a series of strange spiders. One of them bit Peter, causing him to fall into a coma and give him the opportunity to meet the Spider Queen. When he woke up, he discovered that he possessed many unusual super powers of spiders.
From then on, Peter Parker began his superhero career, like other variations of himself in the vast multiverse. He has faced scary super villains like Norman Osborn, Crime Master, Vulture or Mysterio. Spider-Noir even joined the Superior Spider-Army, an army led by Superior Spider-Man, consisting of many different versions of the Spider, and formed to hunt down the mysterious person who was “on the loose”. with Spideys in the multiverse.
Different from the image of a friendly, innocent Spider familiar to many fans, Spider-Noir often brings a darker, more serious atmosphere, similar to DC's The Punisher or Batman. Spider-Man's famous catchphrase, “with greater power comes greater responsibility”, was also changed for Noir: “It is man's responsibility to hold back when power increases”. Frequently active at night, with a working style no different from that of a professional detective, Noir can be considered the villain of the criminal world in New York. And this pessimistic version of Spider-Man also does not hesitate to commit murder in his superhero journey.
Speaking of strength, Spider-Noir possesses the basic skills of a Spider-Man such as Spider-Sense to recognize approaching danger; the ability to shoot natural black silk from the wrist; The ability to stick to walls allows him to climb easily on any terrain, although this guy often uses his parkour abilities more; super physical; super strength; Super speed and super stamina. More specifically, since being bitten by a spider, Peter Parker no longer feels any physical pain.
However, the most powerful “weapon” that Noir possesses is his genius mind and sharp reasoning ability. As mentioned above, he used to work for the Daily Bugle newspaper, investigating many different cases to find clues to expose the Goblin. Spidey is extremely knowledgeable about science, a talented photographer and a professional investigator. In addition, Noir's close combat abilities and aiming skills are both at a very high level, allowing him to easily manage actions when necessary.
Spider-Noir's costume is also a notable point, because it is made from Uncle Ben's pilot uniform during World War I. This outfit usually comes with a fedora and a long coat or vest. With a dark red-brown tone, the special suit allows Peter to move stealthily in the dark easily. In addition, he also loves long-range weapons, such as pistols, revolvers, Thompson submachine guns or incendiary grenades. Noir's appearance is reminiscent of the typical image of American detectives in the 30s and 40s, and certainly makes the audience think of Cole Phelps in the hit game LA Noire of Rockstar Games.
As mentioned above, Nicolas Cage will take on the role of Spider-Noir in this project. Previously, the actor also voiced Noir in the animated blockbuster Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In addition, Sony Pictures' first Spider-Man television project also features Lamorne Morris (as Joseph “Robbie” Robertson, Peter's close friend/colleague at the Daily Bugle); and Brendan Gleeson (unidentified main villain).
Currently, the new Spider-Man series will be titled “Noir”, with Harry Bradbeer taking on the role of director and producer of the first two episodes. Sony Pictures has not yet set an official release date for this series.
