Media Partners Asia estimates anime monetization to reach $2.5 billion by 2023 in Japan

Research and consulting firm Media Partners Asia (MPA) predicted in a new report titled “The Future of the Japanese Video Industry” on Tuesday that Japan's online video industry will grow. Growing at a compound annual growth rate of 7% over the next five years, Japan's online video industry will account for 45% of total screen revenue by 2029, including free-to-air TV, pay TV and theatrical, compared with 35% in 2024, according to the report. report.
The report estimates that the total revenue of the Japanese video industry will increase from 31.8 billion USD in 2024 to 34.1 billion USD in 2029. The report predicts that the revenue of the online video industry will reach approximately $15.3 billion by 2029, largely driven by user-generated content and social videos on YouTube. Streaming content from providers like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and U-NEXT followed.
The report estimates the anime industry to earn $2.5 billion in Japan by 2023 through television, streaming and theatrical monetization. The anime industry accounts for more than 8% of the total revenue of the domestic screen industry. The report adds that streaming accounts for half of anime earnings by 2023, followed by television at 27%.
MPA claims that in the first nine months of 2024, anime also accounted for 36% of on-demand premium video interactions.
Japanese animation was also responsible for 117 of the top 200 titles on SVOD platforms in the first nine months of 2024 in Japan.
Financial research firm Teikoku Databank found in a report on the 2023 anime industry on August 27 that the value of the anime industry (based on 317 companies) stood at 339,020,000,000 yen (approx. 2.36 billion USD) in 2023, up 22.9% from 275,783,000,000 yen in 2022 (about 1.90 billion USD in current conversion).
