Summary
Captain Pikachu’s weakness is being considered “cute”, causing him to have strong allergies and even affecting his fighting ability. This weakness sets Captain Pikachu apart from Ash’s Pikachu, who has never had comparable long-term problems and actually enjoys being called cute. The episode highlights the differences between Captain Pikachu and Friede compared to Ash and Pikachu, showing that they argue and fight more often but still have a strong relationship.
Pokémon Horizon‘ Captain Pikachu has proven to be a powerful warrior who can stand his ground against even opponents with a large size advantage. However, it turns out Cap isn’t invincible; in fact, his one weakness is actually devastating to Pikachu: he is allergic to being called “cute.”
In episode #35, Cap and Friede go to work to help raise funds for the airship and keep them running. They are accompanied by Riko and Roy and are tasked with finding the missing Pokémon, Bramblin. Bramblins are carried and blown by the wind, making it difficult to search the desert full of similar-looking tumbleweeds. The group split up and went around town asking about it, but that didn’t give them any new clues.
However, as they were asking around, two women noticed Captain Pikachu and his hat, and immediately start cooing about how cute he is. Immediately, Captain Pikachu started sneezing everywhereeven fell off the fire hydrant he was standing on.
Captain Pikachu’s weakness makes him very different from Ash
In the original anime, Ash’s Pikachu never had any problem being called cute and in fact, seemed to quite enjoy the attention. Captain Pikachu’s backstory has revealed that he is quite different from other Pikachu, always dreaming of flying until he invented Rising Volt Tackle, but never Pikachu (or any Pokémon). any, really) have such strong reactions to mere words. Pikachu are famous throughout the Pokémon world for their cuteness, so this could be a pretty big deal for Cap whenever he decides to leave his spaceship to go on a mission.
The “allergy” is even so bad that when the villain in the episode calls him cute (with the intention of robbing him), it begins to affect his ability to fight back. Given that Captain Pikachu has been able to conquer so many dangerous and powerful enemies already in the series, it’s nice to finally have such a weakness revealed to him. Cap certainly runs the risk of becoming too powerful a force, and while he can overcome this weakness, it’s still an issue he may have to deal with in the future.
Ash’s Pikachu has never really had any comparable long-term problems, so this helps further differentiate the two Pikachu characters. The episode also shows how Friede and Cap’s relationship is different from that of Ash and his Pikachu, as the two argue and fight in a way that Ash and Pikachu rarely do. Of course, their relationship remains strong despite these quarrels, and Friede trusts Cap to execute a plan that will ultimately save the world.
Luckily, Captain Pikachu’s “allergy” to being called cute remains a secret only to the crew, ensuring that the future is secure. Pokémon Horizon Villains will not be able to exploit this weakness so easily.
