When Ash returns home from his time in Hoenn, he meets Misty again at the end of the episode “The Scheme Team”, with a new Pokémon, Azurill. Ash asks where she got it, and she tells him that it hatched from an egg that none other than Tracey had given her. This shows with certainty that the egg’s parent is Tracey’s Marill, and thus Misty’s Azurill is its child.
Why Azurill?
While Marill is a Water-type Pokémon, Azurill is not. As a baby, it was classified as Normal/Fairy Type – or just Normal, at the time of release. However, Azurill is an infant Pokémon introduced in Ruby and Sapphire, and therefore needs to appear in the anime in some way. Because Hoenn’s only other child Pokémon is Wynaut, a Psychic type, which is not suitable for Misty. Misty was also previously known for carrying Togepi, a baby Pokémon that is also of the Normal type. Azurill is a good replacement for Misty, and it benefits to fit her theme a bit better if it evolves.
It is revealed that Misty’s Azurill is related to Tracey’s Marill in Pokémon the anime doesn’t completely change anything, but it’s an interesting sign that Ash’s friends stay in touch even when he’s not around.
