Summary
Mollie, a nurse character in Pokémon Horizons, stands out for her adventurous spirit, similar to the previous Nurse Joy in the Orange Islands arc. Mollie is a member of the Pokémon doctor family, but chooses to help wild Pokémon instead of working at a Pokémon Center. The existence of Nurse Joys in both Pokémon Horizons and the original series suggests they share a world, arousing the curiosity of fans.
Pokémon Horizon has attracted some attention for its nurse character, Mollie, who stands out among the world’s countless Nurse Joys thanks to her adventurous spirit, but the anime introduced a rogue Nurse Joy in the arc Orange Islands. This Nurse Joy has a lot in common with Mollie, despite being introduced more than 20 years apart.
In Pokémon Horizons, Mollie is a punk-looking girl with pink hair who is confirmed to be a member of the “large Pokémon doctor family” (heavily implied to be the Joy family). However, Mollie rejected the idea of working at a Pokémon Center, being interested in helping sick or injured wild Pokémon in the wild. That led her to join the Rising Volt Tacklers as their resident nurse. Much of Mollie’s backstory was told in episode 11, where she helped captured Pokémon after a forest fire.
However, long before Mollie, there was another Nurse Joy who decided to give up life in the Pokémon Center and help suffering wild Pokémon.
Pokémon Horizons is scheduled to launch its English dub in the US on Netflix on March 7, 2024.
The adventurous nurse of the Orange Joy Islands is a Proto-Mollie
By the time of the Orange Islands, Nurse Joy’s extended family was an established joke. They find identical (but tanned) Nurse Joys at Pokémon Centers across the Orange Islands, but in the episode “The Joy of Pokémon”, Ash and friends run into Nurse Joy, who is sailing from the island Island to island, helping injured and sick Pokémon where they live. living. She did this because many of the islands were too small to build a Pokémon Center, rather than having some disagreement with her family.
This Nurse Joy appears to be a brave adventurer, choosing to sail into a storm to save an injured Pokémon, and has a particular weakness for wild Pokémon, like Mollie. It would certainly be interesting to see Nurse Joy stand out so much more than the other identical Pokémon Center nurses, and the series has implemented this idea at this relatively early stage. Although this Nurse Joy would not appear again, she did receive a cameo much later in the banned Pokémon episode “The Ice Cave!”, in a photo on the wall.
While Mollie still has a lot to reveal about the character’s history, it’s interesting to think that she may have heard about this particular Nurse Joy as a child, which inspired the she chose her own life path instead of continuing the family line. Although the timeline in Pokémon Horizons compared to the original series has not yet been established, Nurse Joy’s existence in both suggests they share the same world. Hope that, Pokémon Horizon will run with the premise of an adventurous Joy and give fans something they only tasted years ago.
