Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced on Tuesday that it has increased the suggested retail price of the PlayStation 5 console and related peripherals, which will take effect in Japan on September 2. The company cited harsh external conditions, including recent changes in the global economic situation, as the reason for the price change.
The PlayStation 5 console now has a suggested retail price of 79,980 yen (about $551), up from its previous price of 66,980 yen (about $461). The PS5 Digital Edition now costs 72,980 yen (about $502), up from 59,980 yen (about $413). The PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller Duo Pack now costs 89,980 yen (about $620), up from 74,980 yen (about $516), and the DualSense Digital Edition Duo Pack now costs 82,980 yen (about $571), up from 67,980 yen (about $468). All suggested retail prices include tax.

PS5 console sales surpassed 50 million by December 2023.
As of July 2021, Sony has sold over 10 million PS5 units worldwide since its launch, making it Sony's best-selling PS5 console. Sony has sold over 20 million PS5 units worldwide as of June 2022. The PS5 surpassed the 30 million mark in January 2023 and then surpassed the 40 million mark in July 2023.
The PS5 launched in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea on November 12, 2020. It launched in most of the rest of the world on November 19, 2020. The PS5 retailed for $499.99, and the PS5 Digital Edition (excluding the optical drive) retailed for $399.99. The PS5 released a new, smaller model to replace the old model throughout November to early December 2023 in various territories, and the new Digital Edition increased in price to $449.99.
The company launched PlayStation VR2, its new virtual reality (VR) system for the PS5, in February 2023.
SIE releases Project Leonardo – a new, highly customizable accessibility controller aimed at helping disabled players play more comfortably – for PlayStation 5 on December 6.
