The Oshi no Ko manga has surpassed major titles like Dragon Ball Super, My Hero Academia, etc. on Shueisha’s MANGA Plus.

According to a report from Sportskeeda, Aka Akasaka’s Oshi no Ko has risen to #5 on the most popular list on the digital manga service. The series has racked up over 400k views on the platform, reaching a higher readership than a collection of the industry’s hottest properties. Besides Dragon Ball Super and MHA, the music-centric manga has also surpassed Spy x Family, Black Clover, Dandadan, Mashle: Magic and Muscles, Naruto: Sasuke’s Story and Kaiju No 8.

The Oshi no Ko property enjoyed massive success in 2023, with an anime adaptation bringing the project into the mainstream. Studio Doga Kobo’s adaptation of Akasaka’s manga, illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari, ranked at number one in My Anime List’s all-time best anime ranking after an explosive first episode. It is currently in second place behind Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Despite this, the anime still achieved great success as the biggest debut in HIDIVE history, drawing many people’s attention to the original material.

Four manga series surpassing Oshi no Ko

Only four manga series received more readers than the modern fantasy series. They are in the following order: Jujutsu Kaisen, Boruto: Naruto Next Generation, One Piece, and Chainsaw Man. Chainsaw Man holds onto the number one spot after Tatsuki Fujimoto’s series hit nearly 1 million views on the website. This puts it far ahead of One Piece’s second place of nearly 700k.

The film is about a gynecologist who is killed and reborn as the child of Ai Hoshino, a rapidly rising Japanese Idol whom he greatly admired before his death. He and his sister, another Ai reincarnated fan, accept their new lives as Aquamarine and Ruby Hoshino and try to help their mother’s cause. Many have praised the title for its effective use of the metaphor of reincarnation, which has grown considerably in popularity over the past few years. Additionally, it has received acclaim for its use of bright and upbeat imagery that contrasts with extremely dark and sometimes violent themes.

Oshi no Ko is available to read on Shueisha MANGA Plus, with the anime streaming on HIDIVE. Episode 4 will premiere on May 3, 2023, with regional release dates available here.
