Director reveals plans at Crunchyroll Anime Awards in Tokyo Image via Georges Biard, CC BY-SA 3.0 Bong Joon-Ho, the Oscar-winning director and co-writer of Parasite, made the reveal during the Crunchyroll Awards Anime Awards 2024 on Saturday that he is planning an animation project in Japan. Before presenting the Best Director award to Shōta Goshozono (Jujutsu Kaisen season 2), the Korean filmmaker said he spent the day before the ceremony in his hotel room drawing a storyboard for the project.
CartoonBrew reported on February 13 that the director is preparing to produce an upcoming animated film in Korea. The director began writing the script for this film in 2018 and the film will begin production in the second half of this year. Korean news outlet Daum reported that the film will have a budget of “about 70 billion won (52.6 USD) million” and that Sony Pictures is in negotiations for distribution rights outside of Korea. According to CartoonBrew, the film’s story will focus on “the relationship between humans and marine life”.
In his comments on Saturday, Bong did not clarify whether his planned animation project in Japan would be the same as the previously revealed film, or a separate project. He also did not specify which studio will carry out the planned project in Japan.
Bong’s 4th VFX studio previously collaborated with Toei Animation and AZworks on director Shinji Aramaki’s animated film Harlock: Space Pirate. Jang Seungyeol, an animator at the studio, also participated in the production of Yoshiaki Okumura’s Korasho no Kaitei Wakuwaku Daibouken! anime movies.
