One Piece author Eiichiro Oda revealed the “lonely” backstory of Dracule “Hawk Eyes” Mihawk in the latest volume 108 of the manga.
The release of One Piece Volume 108 features SBS’s new popular Q&A column — Oda. When asked, “In Chapter 1058, Crocodile said that Mihawk was once called the Marine Hunter. Does this have anything to do with Mihawk joining the Seven Lords of the Sea?”, Oda replied: “Mihawk has a history of resentment against the Marines and has also suffered a lot of betrayal. Therefore, he is ‘of the same type’ as Crocodile, who distrusts others in his feelings of loneliness, and he is already bored with his life.”

Oda continued, “I think he joined the Shichibukai because it was peaceful, at least in the sense that he wasn’t being chased by the Navy. One Piece reveals how Zoro can soon surpass Mihawk
Oda’s depiction of Mihawk may contradict what many people know about the character: calm, stoic, and emotionless. However, Oda’s new admission paints Mihawk as lonely, vengeful, and perhaps lacking direction due to the way he hid behind Buggy to carry out his revenge against the Marines. Oda previously explained the rather childish reason why Zoro has three swords; with Zoro’s apparent intention to counter Mihawk’s lack of a swordsman, it becomes clearer how Zoro could surpass his sensei as the world’s greatest swordsman.
