Now that the One Piece story has reached its Final Saga, it seems that many mysteries are also being unraveled, including some truths about the devil fruit. For example, where do devil fruits really come from?
Devil fruit of the One Piece world
“Devil Fruits”, as they are called, are very powerful and diverse. At the beginning of the series, Luffy ate the first Devil Fruit introduced, the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which turned his body into rubber. This power has become the Straw Hat's trademark and paved the way for many adventures.
At first, devil fruit powers were rare in the East Blue region, and were considered legendary. But as the story progresses to the Grand Line, it seems that many people have eaten the devil fruit, each appearing stronger than the last.
Over time, many powerful devil fruit abilities were introduced. For example, the Logia fruit types are considered the strongest and the Mythical Zoan types are the rarest and most attractive. Great figures, such as the Yonko and the World Government's Navy Admiral, have also revealed themselves to have extraordinary abilities through eating Devil Fruits.
Professor Vegapunk revealed something fascinating: Devil Fruits arise from human desires. Every type of devil fruit that exists is desired by someone in another dimension. This explains why each Devil Fruit seems to find those who need them the most. For example, Luffy has the power of the Sun God Nika and Blackbeard has the dark power of the Yami Yami no Mi.
While it makes sense, this explanation still leaves the question hanging: how were devil fruits first created? It's a mystery that continues to linger as the story moves further, keeping us all guessing.
Is there a devil fruit tree?
Devil Fruits, magical fruits from the One Piece world, are known for their ability to transform those who eat them, but they also take away the ability to swim. Even though they are created from desire, they are still fruits in the end. And fruit usually grows on trees, right?
So is it possible that devil fruits grow from a special tree? This idea is not strange. Oda himself, the author of the series, mentioned the devil fruit tree in a parallel story, although it does not appear explicitly in One Piece. In the Romance Dawn manga, the author talks about the devil fruit, hinting that it may appear later in the series.
If a devil fruit tree exists, it's reasonable to think that it could spread these mysterious fruits throughout the world. And the idea of a special tree responsible for unique fruits is not new in One Piece.
We already know the Sunlight Tree Eve, a giant tree that brings light to Fishman Island. This plant breathes, absorbs sunlight on the surface and distributes it through the roots. In a way, it is the heart of the Yarukiman mangrove forest.
We also have the Adam “treasure” tree, famous for being the strongest wood in existence. The Straw Hat Pirates' legendary ships Oro Jackson and Thousand Sunny were built with this wood. These trees show that Oda is not afraid to include trees with power and meaning in his story.
So is there a special tree from which devil fruits are born? Probably yes. And if so, this particular tree could be tied to human wishes and dreams, perhaps created by a highly advanced Ancient Kingdom, even more superior than Dr. Vegapunk. This tree can be a way to make wishes come true, creating devil fruits.
But where is this mysterious tree?
The devil fruit tree may be in a visible place but hidden. One possibility is that it is at the beginning of the Red Line, perhaps in Marijoa. An even more intriguing theory is that the Sunlight Tree Eve, the tree that lights up Fish-Man Island, is also a devil fruit tree.
It would be a surprising twist to discover that the same tree that brought light to the bottom of the sea also gave the world powerful devil fruits. Of course, there could be another tree responsible for these fruits, but the idea of a single tree for both functions is not as far-fetched as it seems.
