One Piece Finally Explains Why Kuma Saved the Straw Hats
Chapter #1101 of One Piece suggests that reason Kuma saved Luffy and the Straw Hats in Sabaody possibly because he believed that Luffy was Nika. This finally explains why Kuma went so far as to protect the Thousand Sunny for two years until the Straw Hats returned, which was one of his last wishes to Vegapunk. Having heard all about Nika and hoping for his return since he was a child, it makes sense for Kuma to do everything in his power to ensure Luffy and that hope survive.
Although chapter #1101 also confirmed that Kuma knew Luffy was Dragon’s son, it seems It’s unlikely Kuma would go that far just because Luffy is his friend’s son, regardless of his loyalty to Dragon and the Revolutionary army. While it is possible that Luffy’s relationship with Dragon contributed to his decision, Luffy’s similarity to Nika was certainly the deciding factor.
Overall, Kuma’s backstory is a gold mine for explanations and has reopened many of the series’ biggest mysteries.
