Although the layers of mystery in One Piece are finally starting to unravel in the Egghead Island arc, there's still a lot we don't know. This is especially true when it comes to Shanks, one of the most important characters in the series.
Shanks is introduced in the East Blue Saga but rarely appears in the series. And when Shanks shows up, it's always a big moment. The legendary One Piece treasure is something the whole world wants, including Shanks, as confirmed in chapter 1054.
As soon as Shanks saw Luffy's new wanted poster, he told Beck that it was time for them to take action and claim One Piece. However, an important detail in this scene was lost in translation.
So what does Shanks imply in One Piece chapter 1056?
According to a native Japanese speaker on Twitter: “The kanji in that scene is used for 'take by force' (奪う), suggesting that Shanks plans to steal the One Piece from its rightful owner. He probably knows who the real owner of One Piece is, which is why he chose this expression.”
This chapter also implies that Shanks waited until Luffy awakened his devil fruit before actually taking action.
Shanks also met the Five Elders and talked about a certain pirate, which was even more strange considering he had stolen Luffy's devil fruit from the World Government. Shanks' actions resulted in Luffy accidentally eating a devil fruit and gaining powers similar to Joyboy.
From the beginning, Shanks' appearance in the small village of East Blue was unusual. However, things happened that way, regardless of whether it was intentional or not.
Additionally, in Oden's flashback, Roger tells Shanks something that has yet to be revealed. Much of the information about Shanks confirms that his goals have never been simple since day one.
Furthermore, it is unclear whether his desire to take the treasure by force was selfish or not. Shanks has never shown any signs of being an evil character, but he is a pirate nonetheless. Oda has enough ability to introduce some unexpected twists and make Shanks' story darker.
