The beloved One Piece manga is going on a three-week hiatus, and the reason behind the hiatus has to do with the sudden passing of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama.
Akira Toriyama's death on March 1 shocked the anime and manga community. One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, who was inspired by Toriyama, shared a heartfelt message expressing his grief. Oda mentioned that Toriyama's passing left a significant void and he fondly recalled when Toriyama sensei first called him by name and called him a friend.
One Piece fans know well about Eiichiro Oda's dedication to his profession, often working tirelessly, only sleeping 3 to 4 hours a day. Many fans have expressed concern for Oda sensei's health and have always encouraged him to prioritize his health.
It seems that Toriyama's sudden death has caused Eiichiro Oda to reflect on his own health. In a recently shared handwritten message, Oda revealed that he will be taking a break for the next three issues of Shonen Jump.
Oda said that the purpose of this break is for self-maintenance. Although he admitted that people may be worried about his health after Toriyama sensei passed away, he reassured readers that he would not take any leave due to illness.
Instead, he wants to use this time to rest, reflect, and reflect on the nature of One Piece. The full translated message can be found courtesy of @libraryofohara.
