Warning! Content reveal for One Piece #1084!
Luffy’s Straw Hat Fleet extremely loyal to him, but A piece shows that they actually unwittingly betrayed him. One Piece’s Mangaka Eiichiro Oda introduced the Grand Fleet in Dressrosa, but it didn’t really have a big impact on the plot until Reverie. The manga only revealed just how influential it is in its latest chapter.
Chapter #1084, translated by Stephen Paul, reveals more about what happened at Reverie. Heavenly dragon Charlos chained the mermaid princess Shirahoshi to enslave her. Two members of the Great Straw Hat Fleet, Sai and Leo, rush to her rescue and their combined strike force actually kills Charlos, brutally crushing his head. This was a big event because even challenging a Celestial Dragon would cause the World Government to go after someone with full force. This means that the World Government will likely become more aggressive in its attempt to destroy Luffy’s Great Straw Hat Fleet. But more tragically, this death also represents a betrayal of Luffy’s ideals.
Luffy’s fleet betrayed One Piece’s ideals
One Piece is often criticized for seemingly not wanting to kill its characters. Oda has stated this is because in the world of One Piece, breaking someone’s dream is even more devastating than killing them. This ethos of the series has also allowed some of the great villains from previous seasons to reappear in surprising new ways, such as Buggy becoming one of One Piece’s new Yonkos, formed the Cross Guild with Crocodile and Mihawk. It also makes a few deaths like Ace and Whitebeard’s even more devastating. Similarly, it also makes Charles’ death all the more brutal.
By killing Charlos, Leo and Sai have the potential to jeopardize Luffy’s reputation as the Great Straw Hat Fleet, making them bloodthirsty killers. Of course, perhaps no one really meant to kill Charlos, but they had to bear the consequences anyway. More importantly, as the leader of his Fleet, Luffy must live with these consequences. He was already in the sights of the World Government, but now he could be turned against him even if Luffy would never truly condone killing his enemies.
This betrayal will lead to dire consequences for Luffy in One Piece
Luffy has yet to take into account the major consequences of the creation of his Grand Fleet, but this event might make him realize that it may not be a completely positive thing. It could also be part of the reason why One Piece’s five powerful elders are directly involved in the ongoing Egghead Island Event. So no matter what the reason they killed Charlos, Leo and Sai did it Luffy’s Great Fleet betraying him, this will definitely cause big problems in A pieceupcoming chapters.
