Netflix’s live-action One Piece series offers a close-up look at the iconic ship in a new poster.
The streaming company has released a key visual for the upcoming series, as reported by The Direct. It provides a solid look at the Straw Hat Pirates’ classic ship, the Going Merry. The poster features a front view of the marine vehicle, focusing on the iconic sheep’s head seen in Eiichiro Oda’s manga and Toei Animation anime.
The poster gives fans a detailed look at the live-action version of the ship. Beneath the sheep’s head is a cannon pointed straight at the camera. In addition, the Jolly Roger, the symbol of the Straw Hat Pirates, is also painted on the ship’s sail. Overall, the poster depicts a very accurate version of the ship with the original material. It also includes a title that reads “The Pirates Are Coming.”
Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action Series
The Going Merry plays an important role in the animated series, as it is the first ship officially belonging to Luffy’s crew. It was designed by Kaya’s butler, Merry, and was given to the team after they defended Syrup Village from the Black Cat Pirates. The poster continues to piece together what the series will look like, alongside the recent release of Luffy and Jolly Roger’s hand-drawn straw hats.
Netflix has a well-documented history of adapting anime classics into live-action. Some of the most notable projects include the 2017 film Death Note, directed by Adam Wingard, and the 2021 series Cowboy Bebop, directed by Christopher Yost and Andre Nemec. Both projects were poorly received by fans and critics. One Piece isn’t the only adaptation Netflix is developing, as the company is also working on Avatar: The Last Airbender, Yu Yu Hakusho, Mobile Suit Gundam, etc.
The release date of the live-action One Piece series has yet to be revealed at the time of writing, but it is slated for 2023 and is rumored to be in August. Fans have started asking questions. about the quality of the film, with concerns stemming from previous Netflix anime projects. However, Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the property, has announced that the chapter will not be released until he is personally satisfied with it.
Anime One Piece is currently adapting the “Wanderland” and is available on Crunchyroll. The manga’s latest installment — “Egghead Island” — is ongoing and available to read on Viz Media with a Shonen Jump subscription.
