One Piece Film: Red gets a new trailer ahead of its theatrical re-release.
Not content to be the highest-grossing Japanese film of 2022, One Piece Film: Red will return in October in a crisp 4K Blu-ray edition featuring three special extra episodes. The trailer was posted on YouTube and further explores the emotional turmoil Uta, Shanks and the Straw Hats face in Elegia. There will also be “cheer screenings” where fans can sing along to ADO’s award-winning soundtrack as well as a chance to win gifts.
One Piece Film: Red has grossed 19.70 billion yen ($152 million) in Japan and about $12.75 million in the United States. It not only marks Japan’s biggest box office return in 2022, but also the entire One Piece franchise. The success of Film: Red and The First Slam Dunk was what led Toei to a record-breaking year at the box office. Grossing $259 million in Asia, The First Slam Dunk has now enjoyed good reviews in the US, with moviegoers taking in $1 million in its opening weekend.
The massive success of the One Piece manga and anime didn’t always translate to the box office in the West. Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train, and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero have stunned in recent years, grossing $34 million, $49 million, and $38 million, respectively. USD in North America.
One Piece franchise continues to be successful
One Piece’s Western box office hits might explain why the October re-release of Film: Red will be limited to 366 Japanese theaters. Fans around the world broke the internet in the iconic Episode 1071, temporarily knocking down platforms like Crunchyroll, as well as numerous piracy websites. One Piece may be looking to celebrate this special moment in Japan, where anime is most popular. Recent One Piece Days saw the announcement of an anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s Monsters, followed by a full trailer for Netflix’s One Piece live-action. This was followed by the announcement that One Piece will receive an ending theme song for the first time in 17 years. Interest in the franchise is said to have never been at its peak, marking the perfect opportunity to take One Piece Film: Red past the 20 billion yen mark.
Toei has held special reruns of One Piece Film: Gold in the United States before, giving fans hope for the future. One Piece Film: Red is still available to stream via Crunchyroll.
