What happened in One Piece episode 1118?
Produced by Toei Animation; Directed by Kenichi Takeshita
In episode #1118 of One Piece, “The Sacred Land of Chaos! Sai and Leo's Full Power Attack!” Sabo and Bonney retrieve the keys to Kuma and the other slaves' chains.but they left and freed Karasu. As for Bonney, now that she knew her father would be safe, she went to Egghead to interrogate Vegapunk, and as for Sabo, he decided to investigate a mysterious location called the Lost Chamber after some guards told him to investigate.
At Pangea Castle, Saint Charlos made an attempt to use Kuma to enslave Shirahoshi, with all the world leaders too afraid to go against a Celestial Dragon to help her. Luckily, Sai and Leo had no such doubts, both morally and as pirates, and as such, Sai and Leo saved Shirahoshi and beat Charlos so hard that his body was almost flattened into a pancake.. Everyone panicked at the thought of a Celestial Dragon being killed, and in the meantime, Morley arrived and brought Kuma back to the Revolutionary Army.
While all of that was going on, Cobra met with the Five Elders to discuss Nefertari Lily, who had helped found the World Government, but had mysteriously disappeared before she could return to Alabasta. The Five Elders claimed to know nothing, so Cobra decided to move on to another subject: a letter Lily had written before she disappeared, which discussed, among other things, the Will of D. However, the Five Elders never got a chance to respond, because in a major twist, One piece Episode #1118 ends with Imu appearing and sitting on the Empty Throne in front of Cobra..
How One Piece Anime Resolved Imu's Gender Issue
A big part of the reason why episode #1118 received so much attention was because it was the first time Imu spoke in the series, meaning there was a chance to finally reveal whether Imu was a man or a woman. However, One Piece episode #1118 avoided revealing Imu's gender by not crediting the voice actor.and their voices were also filtered through a heavy filter. What could be pieced together from their voices sounded quite genderless, so it was still impossible to make a definitive statement about Imu's gender.
While it may seem odd to go so far as to hide Imu's gender, it makes sense for the One Piece anime to do so. Even with the most recent events of the manga, very little has been revealed about Imu, so for the anime to make a statement about her gender when the manga hasn't revealed it yet would be a huge spoiler. So, One Piece episode #1118 makes it impossible to determine Imu's gender through her voice actor, helping to maintain the ambiguity of the character. And overall, this is probably the best way to sell that idea.
One Piece sells one of its biggest moments, despite a few shortcomings
Visually, One Piece episode #1118 isn't one of the anime's best efforts. While there are plenty of beautiful shots from start to finish, most notably when Sai and Leo attack Saint Charlos, Too many scenes in One Piece episode #1118 are slow paced and poorly illustrated and directed. This episode isn't the worst in the anime, but it's noticeably worse than the most recent work and is therefore quite difficult to watch.
Episode #1118 succeeds in its biggest moment though: Imu's appearance against Cobra. The camerawork and general direction in Imu's scene does a great job of prolonging the Imu's appearance to emphasize how threatening they are supposed to be, as does the accompanying soundtrack, and it leads to One Piece Episode #1118 Completely Promotes Imu as a Villain. This will certainly lead to even greater events in the future. One piece anime, and hopefully they'll get the direction they need to really shine.
