One Piece reveals new voice actor for Sabo after Toru Furuya controversy
Furuya, who previously played Sabo in One Piece and Yamcha in Dragon Ball, stepped down from these and other roles after confirming his controversial relationship with a fan. The 70-year-old veteran voice actor admitted to having an affair with a fan in her 30s for four and a half years. During that time, Furuya admitted and apologized for assaulting her and pressuring her to have an abortion. Although Furuya publicly admitted to the relationship on May 22, he did not officially step down from his ongoing anime roles until June 22.
Currently, there are no additional announcements regarding Furuya's other anime roles, such as Rei Furuya in Detective Conan (Case Closed). Before deleting his social media accounts on X, Furuya issued an official statement that read: “Due to my selfish actions, I, Toru Furuya, have caused trouble and worry to many people. This incident has caused significant damage to the works and characters of Detective Conan and One Piece. In order to make up for the damage caused to these works and characters, and to support the fans of these works, I have decided to withdraw from voicing the characters Furuya Rei and Sabo after deep reflection and pain. Once again, I sincerely apologize to everyone for the considerable trouble caused. I deeply regret this incident and feel truly sorry.”
