Episode 1108 is a natural escalation of the tension of the Egghead Island arc.
This week's One Piece seems to be a clear line because of the severity of the World Government's efforts. Of course there was always danger throughout. The Straw Hats have been going about their usual business all this time — fighting monsters and robots and uncovering ancient secrets buried by global conspiracies. Another Tuesday with Luffy and his gang. But I think this episode makes it clear that the crew is well and truly aware of the danger they're in.
Everyone was staring at the barrel of a loaded gun called Seraphim. It's clear that they are very strong and the Straw Hats are used to fighting powerful enemies. In fact, they were also used to fighting some of the Lords copied by Seraphim! But when York is turned to stone and Zoro's slashes are deflected, they begin to realize all kinds of powers they are up against. These artificial beings have multiple sets of internal powers and extensive energy reserves to draw upon. Not to mention it looked like they were sweating. This pushes Zoro and Luffy to the brink of considering teaming up with CP0, which is a pretty big deal (of course, Luffy is pretty blatant about it but that's Luffy).
The weight of what is about to happen to Egghead Island is brought to the forefront with flashbacks to the Ohara incident. With the destruction of Ohara, there will be a loss of its past and its knowledge, and with the destruction of Egghead, there will be a loss of its future and its potential. The World Government clearly considered both losses acceptable. Like all oppressive regimes, the World Government is interested in maintaining a permanent presence where its power is supreme, and all other eras are meaningless losses in its myth-making process.
Oh, and Franky throws his entire crotch at the camera. One Piece has no limits.
