What happened in One Piece Episode #1107?
Produced by Toei Animation; Directed by Tasuku Shimaya
One Piece episode #1107, “Shiver! An evil hand is stalking the laboratory”, continuing Kuma's backstory by showing a mob appearing and beating him for running away, Kuma feels that he would rather die than come back . It was never said he would come back, but it was implied Kuma is a slave of the Heavenly Dragon, likely related to Kuma's ascension to Mary Geoise. Bonney was initially forced to leave Kuma's memories, but she strengthened her resolve to see it through to the end and returned inside.
As Bonney continues to review Kuma's memories, the Straw Hats and the satellites continue to search for Vegapunk, and the Straw Hats also take time to admire more of Vegapunk's inventions. During that time, communications and cameras were mysteriously cut off, Shaka only saw a silhouette of the person responsible. Pythagoras met the shadow and seemed to recognize them, and almost immediately, Pythagoras appears to have perished in a massive explosion.
Usopp, Franky, Lilith and Franky arrived at the scene and were startled by Pythagoras' death, only to be relieved to learn that he survived by separating his head from the rest of his body. As Pythagoras desperately tried to explain what had happened, York saw S-Snake in the area and simultaneously fawned over her while questioning why she was no longer obeying his orders. . S-Snake responded by turning York to stone with his artificial Love Fruit, making it clear S-Snake is the dark figure who attacked Pythagoras and destroyed the camera.
One Piece sets up the traitor with a big twist
One of the Vegapunks is working with the World Government
It is revealed that the Seraphim are attacking the heroes, setting up the idea of someone betraying the heroes. The Seraphim would only go against their orders to stay on standby if someone ordered them to, and with Saint Saturn still on his way to Egghead and Vegapunk having been with Bonney for a while, that means one of the Satellites took control of the Seraphim and betrayed everyone. Why either of them did it remains unclear, but future episodes of One Piece will surely explain the details of their reasons for betrayal at some point.
One Piece Episode #1107 Showcases the Best and Worst of Toei Animation's Style
Sanji fans won't be pleased with one scene in particular
One Piece episode #1107 is another episode that thrives on Toei Animation's style of expanding its source material. Although episode #1107 is largely a transitional episode, Toei Animation has brought a lot of life to A piece through excellent artwork and animation, with every scene having a beautiful consistency and flow down to the smallest detail. Kuma's flashback and S-Snake's reveal are particular standouts, and they certainly won't be the last flashbacks the Egghead arc has in store.
As for Kuma's flashback, that was also handled extremely well. The animation is not only great to watch but also Kuma's backstory was expanded a bit to emphasize the torment he endured while fleeing from the Heavenly Dragons.Of course, all of that made people feel even more heartbroken by Nobuhiko Okamoto's serve. Contrast it with the many shots of Kuma ascending to heaven with Mary Geoise which sells even more, and it's a prime example of how well One Piece's anime can expand on the source material.
Unfortunately, episode #1107 also shows how badly Toei Animation can handle things. While the Straw Hats and the satellites were searching for Vegapunk, Sanji told Stussy that he would become her dog, and although it was just a line of dialogue in the One Piece manga, A piece episode #1107 made a complete joke about Stussy making Sanji act like a dog, even Sanji barked like that. It all seems like an insult to Sanji's character, but other than that, A piece episode #1107 is as good as one would expect.
Be sure to watch A piece episode #1108 when released on Saturday, June 8.
