Dr. Vegapunk's death is one of the most shocking moments in One Piece.
The One Piece manga rarely kills off characters, so having an important character like Vegapunk die is quite a surprising move for the story.
But fans consoled themselves with Lilith. She was one of Vegapunk's satellites and the only one (aside from the traitor York) to survive. Moreover, she even accompanied the Straw Hats to Elbaf. So readers believed that she would fill Vegapunk's role from now on.
But One Piece chapter 1125 reveals that that won't quite happen that way.
Vegapunk is back and this time, the doctor is more himself than when we first met him. On Egghead Island, while everyone is busy with Saturn, Punk Records suddenly starts floating in the air.
Punk Records is where Vegapunk stores his true brain, and thus, his true nature. The Cloud Machines surrounding the area suddenly activate, causing Punk Records to float in the air. York notices this and tries to stop it, but she is too late.
Inside the floating Punk Records, we find a new and completely different Vegapunk. The doctor has merged his four satellites, Shaka, Edison, Pythagoras and Atlas, into one body with four minds inside.
With this, Vegapunk returns in a new form in One Piece chapter 1125. It seems like that was the scientist's plan from the start. That's why he facilitated his own death at the beginning of the story.
