Spoiler alert: This article contains details about the death of a main character in Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece series.
One Piece author Eiichiro Oda admitted to being shocked by the death of Portgas D. Ace – even though it happened at his own hands.
A trusted One Piece news reporter on Twitter named @sandman (or @SandmanAP) recently shared Oda’s personal views regarding the character’s death. The topic is said to be a contentious issue among readers, many of whom have written to Oda begging him not to kill the beloved character. These concerns mirror what Oda’s editor said, who asked him weekly if he was “really going to kill Ace?” While Oda ended up continuing with his original plan, watching death unfold in the One Piece anime led the artist to make the decision a second time, asking himself, “why did Ace get killed? kill so mercilessly?”
History of One Piece Ace
Portgas D. Ace is the sworn brother of Monkey D. Luffy and the main character in the Marineford part. In this part, Ace begins his journey to track down Blackbeard, who escaped after killing a comrade in cold blood. As Ace searches for Blackbeard, the two engage in an intense duel. Ace lost this war and was eventually turned over to the World Government, which sentenced him to death to set an example for him. During the Summit War between Ace’s Whitebeard and the Marines, Ace freed himself. However, he ended up sacrificing his life in a heroic attempt to protect Luffy from the formidable Marine, Admiral Akainu.
Although Ace had a tragic end to the main series, English-speaking readers will soon be able to experience a One Piece spinoff manga that explores the popular character’s early years. This manga adapts the light novel duo, One Piece: Ace’s Story, which Sho Hinata and Tatsuya Hamazaki wrote. Boichi, the main artist of the manga Dr. Stone, created the illustrations for the manga version, the English version currently has a release date of 2024.
