Since Luffy awakened his Gear 5 powers in One Piece, he has shown extremely powerful attacks.
However, in addition to brute strength, Gear 5 is a creative ability, allowing Luffy to turn his surroundings in One Piece into rubber at will.
While all of his abilities have explanations, the ability to “summon objects from nothing” remains a mystery. Although Oda hasn't explained this in the manga, the author eventually shared the answer during a Weekly Shonen Jump Q&A.
The first question of the conversation is: “When Luffy uses Gear 5, he takes out things like goggles and a baseball helmet from what looks like a hagoromo (feathered costume). Tell us how it works. How is it?”
One Piece author's answer was short and simple: “It's the entrance to Nika's fantasy world.”
While the answer may only be a few words, it provides an explanation considering Luffy's power to turn imagination into reality matches the true nature of his devil fruit. Luffy has yet to tap into his true power, and what we've seen so far is just an entrance, or rather a small portion of what he's truly capable of.
Fans realized the implications of Oda's brief reply when one of them wrote: “An entrance into Nika's fantasy world, which means this is just the beginning. We're bound to see Luffy show off his devil fruit's full potential when he realizes it.”
“Even if this is just a brief answer, I feel that it gives us more of what we need to take away from this story, the entrance into Nika's imaginary world, the goggles House, paint color,… are all part of Nika's imaginary world.”, another shared.
“For those who are confused, I've talked about this before. He has TOON FORCE, which is the ability to defy common sense to make jokes, and one of the toon force abilities is hammer space, i.e. an infinite extradimensional storage filled with random items.”a third person chimed in.
