Warning: SPOILERS for episode #1061 of One PieceOne of the most important battles in A piece, Sanji vs Queenwas eventually adapted into an anime, and while the quality of the episode was great as usual, the anime made some changes that fans didn’t necessarily appreciate.
Episode #1061 of One Piece, “Ifrit’s Attack! Sanji vs. Queen”, showing the outcome of one of the four major battles that took place in Onigashima during the Straw Hat Pirates’ raid against Kaido and his Beasts Pirates. Sanji is facing off against one of Kaido’s underlings, the Plague Queen, a powerful individual who combines scientific weapons, cyborg modifications, and the powers of his ancient Zoan Devil Fruits to cause deadly effects. During battle, Queen uses her technology to become invisible, this is quickly duplicated by Sanji, who uses her superhuman speed to achieve the same effect. While the manga clearly demonstrates Sanji’s stealth and ability to float through the air with his powerful kicks, the anime changes that sequence dramatically.
One Piece Anime Changed Sanji’s ‘Invisible’ Technique
In the anime, Sanji still uses his Sky Walk technique to evade the Queen, but he doesn’t seem to be truly invisible. The manga, on the other hand, clearly shows Sanji using his new ability to completely disappear (for both the Queen and readers), because he moves too fast for the naked eye to see. Instead, the animators decided to make the scene clearer to viewers, showing Sanji almost shifting around. However, becoming invisible actually meant more to Sanji. This is not only his dream ability (so he can spy on women), but also the power granted by his Germa Raid Suit.
Anime One Piece is doing a great job adapting one of the manga’s most epic installments, the ending to the Wano Country season. The quality of the animation continues to improve weekly, and the fan feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. There’s nothing wrong with changing some of the details of the series, and the Sanji vs Queen battle is still super fun. In fact, the anime even improves on it by adding meaningful scenes that show Sanji’s inner thoughts about his belittled family legacy, making the moment completely liberating. His is more emotional.
However, it must be said that Sanji’s stealth during his battle with Queen is also a meaningful moment from the manga that the anime can’t quite capture. The raid suit that Sanji destroyed is a symbol of his family’s inheritance, and being able to wield the same power without submitting to Germa’s will is the perfect symbol of Sanji’s worth. The A piece anime decided to make this small but important change to Sanji vs Queen battle versus manga, and fans decide which version they prefer.
