Usopp lied a lot in the early days of A piece manga, but eventually most of them became reality. Eiichiro Oda’s masterpiece One Piece has more than half a billion copies in print and has been around for more than two decades, but its world continues to expand. Even now, many characters are being introduced into the series and many more are yet to appear. Although the number of characters is increasing, each character still has unique and interesting features. No quirks are recycled and everyone is essential to the story. Of course, those introduced in the early stages of the series all have eccentric personalities, especially the members of the Straw Haw pirates.
One of the earliest characters to appear in the Straw Hats is Usopp. His character revolves around deception and acting tough. However, as the story progresses, he becomes worthy of becoming a part of Luffy’s crew. During his days as a boy in Syrup Village, Usopp was a laughing stock, someone who always called him “pirate” to annoy the villagers. He also tells Kaya, the rich and sickly girl he likes, false stories about the great adventures he has experienced. But it turns out, some of his stories are actually foreshadowing. Below are some of Usopp’s lies to Kaya that later became reality.
5 Giant goldfish and poop the size of an island
One story Usopp told Kaya to cheer her up involved him encountering a giant goldfish in the southern seas. According to him, the goldfish’s feces were so large that he mistakenly thought it was an island so he anchored the ship there. He also claimed that he sliced fish and fed it to him in a country inhabited only by little people.
This legend didn’t take long to come true because, during the Little Garden Arc, the Straw Hats encountered two rival giants who were once pirates; they also encounter the fearsome Island Eater. It was a huge goldfish that was almost the size of a Sea King. It is said that it eats whole ships and islands, which is also the reason why many ships do not reach their destination. It is so large that its droppings are also known as Nanimonai Island. As a thank you and farewell gift to the Straw Hats, Brogy and Dorry destroyed it with a single shot.
4 Country of the Dwarves
This lie is told along with the story of the giant goldfish. Usopp told Kaya that after defeating the giant goldfish, he cut it open and served it to an entire country of small people. Not only that, he also confirmed that they still hadn’t eaten the entire goldfish. Usopp accidentally found that country in the Dressrossa arc.
More precisely, the dwarf-like Tontatta kidnapped Usopp and Robin and brought them to Tontatta Kingdom. However, Usopp managed to get out of their predicament in the most Usopp-like way possible. He told them stories full of lies and even claimed that he was a descendant of Montblanc Noland, the hero who first found the Golden City, and called himself Usoland. Because of this, the dwarves consider him their hero and let him and Robin go. They even regrouped behind Usopp and raided the factory under Corrida Arena to save Mansherry.
3 giant moles
Thanks to Luffy and the others, Usopp is captured by Kaya’s butler, who is secretly the vile and murderous Captain Kuro. Trying to get out of his predicament, Usopp resorted to his usual antics. He tells Kuro that he is investigating a giant mole hiding under the mansion. Of course, Kuro immediately points out his lie and mocks Usopp’s father as a pirate. The situation escalated quickly from there, but this wouldn’t be the last time a mole ruined Usopp’s day.
Members of Crocodile’s Baroque Works are revealed in the Arabasta arc. Miss Merry Christmas, Mr. 4, ate the Mogu Mogu no Mi fruit, turning her into half mole, half human. The interesting thing is that she and Mr. 4 confronts Usopp and Chopper again. During their match, Miss Merry Christmas digs a lot of huge holes while Usopp tries to smash her head with his giant hammer. The battle between the two weakest warriors of the Straw Hat Pirates unexpectedly turned into one of One Piece’s best battles and saw one of Usopp’s lies come true.
To put it more symbolically, the lie about Usopp’s mole was realized in his first arc. Kuro researched and plotted against Kaya during his time working at Kaya’s mansion. In a way, this makes him a mole, someone trying to usurp Kaya’s fortune.
2 Medicine to cure all diseases
Usopp did not directly say this to Kaya, but it was still a lie that Usopp made up and that Kaya heard through Merry. After Usopp joined Luffy and became the Straw Hat Pirates, Kaya confessed to Merry how hard it is to lie. Even though she wanted Usopp to fulfill his dream of becoming a truly brave warrior of the sea, she also wanted to keep him from leaving her. So, Merry recounts Kaya Usopp’s backstory and the origin of one of Usopp’s lies that involves one of One Piece’s greatest treasures.
According to Merry, Usopp’s lies started when he was a child. When his father left to continue sailing, Usopp’s mother fell ill. In a vain attempt to cheer her up, every morning Usopp would run to her and tell her that pirates were coming ashore. He told her that his father would return as soon as she was better. However, his mother knew these statements were nothing but lies. Usopp also told her about a medicine that could cure everything, but of course she knew better. However, Usopp discovered the medicine too late in Dresserosa.
Mansherry, the princess of the Tontatta Kingdom, then ate Chiyu Chiyu no Mi, which gave her the ability to heal all living things and restore the former structure of all inanimate objects. Because of this power, Doflamingo kept her as a backup plan in case the SMILE factory was destroyed. Her strength is so strong that she was able to heal villagers after the Straw Hats’ battle with Doflamingo. But despite the power of Mansherry’s Devil Fruit, she’s actually not a drug so this lie is still only half-fulfilled.
Another true lie from Usopp
Now that One Piece is entering the final story of the story, there is still time for many of Usopp’s lies to come true. Mainly because the many hoaxes the Straw Hat sniper has performed with characters other than Kaya continue to come true and even herald what could be major One Piece revelations. An example would be Usopp and his childhood friends playing in Syrup Village, chasing stray animals and treating them as fantasy beasts, like a wild dog Cerberus and a lizard being Dragon. Creatures that Usopp later encounters in Thriller Park and Punk Hazard.
Aside from performing one of One Piece’s most impressive attacks, Usopp has accomplished many wonders in Dressrosa and this will likely bear fruit later in the series. By rescuing thousands of slaves under Sugar’s power, he gained many followers and the title of God Usopp. And if the long-nosed Star Hat Pirates continue to be in the right place at the right time and record outstanding feats, Usopp could be known as the god who helped Luffy become the next Pirate King. But it’s a A piece the fable has yet to come true.
