Warning: Contains spoilers for Manga Jujutsu Kaisen
Summary
Sukuna and Yorozu’s battle resembles a rom-com scene with the pursuer and pursuer dynamic. The harmony of love is a unique feature of the typical battles seen in Jujutsu Kaisen. Gege Akutami’s innovative storytelling pushes the boundaries of what is possible in Shonen fighting manga.
Just because tribe is the most hated cursed soul in Jujutsu Kaisendoesn’t mean he’s not adorable, and YorozuHis actions prove that not only is he likable, but he can also add some romance to one of the best fighting manga currently being published.
In Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 217, the King of Curses Sukuna, who is now controlling Megumi Fushiguro, confronts Yorozu, another ancient witch occupying the body of Megumi’s sister, Tsumiki.
Like other Jujutsu Kaisen matches, there is a lot of commentary between the competitors both before and during the fight. But what makes the commentary in this fight especially interesting are the typical taunts and challenges, Sukuna and Yorozu’s conversation is like love in a romantic comedy manga, such as Don’t Mess With Me Miss Nagatoro.
Yorozu’s twisted love for Sukuna turns Jujutsu Kaisen into a romantic comedy
Despite the unfortunate relationship between the bodies they inhabit
In another example of the chapter’s romantic progression, the subsequent battle between Sukuna and Yorozu is a perfect recreation of a typical rom-com manga scene, minus the action. On one side is Sukuna – the pursued person is doing everything possible with cursed techniques to deny Yorozu’s advances. In the other corner is Yorozu – the suitor who is doing everything he can to make Sukuna fall in love with him. As in a typical romantic comedy, the suitor is often desperate for affection, and for Yorozu, she has been waiting for her chance for a thousand years.
The brief focus on romance is another sign that Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami has pushed the boundaries of classic Shonen fighting manga
The true expression of love for Jujutsu Kaisen, as opposed to a possible romance between Nobara and Yuji or an impossible partnership between Yuta and Rika is a unique twist to the series. Although the final battle will end in tragedy when Sukuna successfully defeats (and kills) Yorozu, the brief focus on romance is another sign that Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami has overcome the boundaries of classic Shonen fighting manga.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s battles always push the boundaries of Shonen
So it’s no surprise that the series would try romance briefly
Gege has always been quite creative in his storytelling. In addition to occasionally using humorous scenes and characters, he often adds art, poetry, and literary references to the Jujutsu Kaisen setting. Jujutsu Kaisen is also not averse to making fun of other manga or the industry itself. This makes the choice to add rom-com elements to the Sukuna – Yorozu battle understandable. Every battle in Jujutsu Kaisen brings something new to the table, which is why it’s no surprise that Sukuna and Yorozu’s rom-com battle is so thrilling.
