Warning: Spoiler for Yuri Is My Job! Episode 1 The yaoi aspect of the classic anime Ouran High School Club Owner is getting a yuri spin in an exciting spring Crunchyroll romance is called Yuri is my job! Almost everything from Ouran, to the protagonist who gets swept up in a strange role by accident, happens in Yuri Is My Job! except with higher stakes. As part of Crunchyroll’s Spring 2023 lineup, Yuri Is My Job! tells the story of a girl named Hime who feels guilty about having to cover the shift for a cafe manager that she accidentally broke her arm. A big part of the cafe’s gimmick is that the hostesses pretend rather than friends.
The original plot of this Miman mangaka is almost identical to that of the Ouran High School Host Club. In that popular series, scholarship student Haruhi Fujioka accidentally breaks an extremely expensive vase and is forced to work to pay off a debt to the club of the same name by entertaining the girls who go there. to see the male members perform forbidden love scenes. However, it’s not just the superficial similarities, both the girls in the cafe and the boys of the Host Club are intent on hiding certain truths about their latest rookies from the group of guests. customers, which could damage their establishment’s image or service, respectively.
Yuri is my job! Bringing a Lesbian Change to Ouran High School Host Club
In addition to switching from yaoi to yuri, Yuri Is My Job! hints that not all acting is fake, which raises the stakes from Ouran. Hime seems to have been gracefully hit by Mitsuki and as a result, Hime shows her true feelings so effectively in her first debut that Mitsuki is forced to play a role closer to her than the other waitresses to maintain. Maintain the image of the cafe. But the problem is that Mitsuki clearly doesn’t like Hime at all, to the point where, despite being very serious about her job, Mitsuki almost ruined a scene where they were supposed to become special sisters just out of hate. Her abandonment for Hime was too strong.
There are similar tensions in the Ouran High School Host Club with club president Tamaki as he falls in love with Haruhi, who is of course happy unaware of his true feelings. Although being rejected would be devastating for Tamaki, there is a difference between unrequited love from someone who truly likes you as a person and being the object of intense hate from someone who can’t stand you. The fact that the fate of the Hime image that she has carefully maintained over the years depends on her working there adds strain to the overall dynamic.
Action in action in action
Hime’s image also introduces some psychological elements to this seemingly optimistic story. Hime’s entire life has been a play. She adopted an all-too-cute look early on in her life to help her land some rich millionaires, and she couldn’t be more different than the way she presents herself. Her true personality is cold, calculating, and surprisingly shallow. Of course, her role in the cafe means that she has to perform a different kind of act, which is part of the reason why she is as successful as she was when she first debuted.
All of these combine to make an ideal romcom setup of its own. Like the story “love was really there long ago,” Hime was looking for true love through acting when she initially played fake love. Meanwhile, this true love can lead to her getting a wife when Hime’s fake love is pursuing a husband. Ouran High School Host Club doesn’t explore these topics and can’t really be considered a yaoi anime. Repetition is an important part of anime, and Crunchyroll’s Yuri is my job! make enough changes to the classical formula established by Ouran High School Club Owner to make it a worthwhile series.
