What happened in Nier: Automata Ver1.1a Episode 20?
Produced by A-1 Pictures; Directed by Toru Hamasaki
Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode #20, “deb[U]nked,” opens with A2 and the machine lifeforms of Pascal village fighting an invading army of evil machine lifeforms. While they manage to defeat the initial attack, A second wave of machine lifeforms attack Pascal's village just as everyone is off guard and destroy the village.with all the villagers except Pascal and the children being killed in the process. Worse still, a Goliath-level form of machinery was detected approaching them, and Pascal took the children to safety while A2 moved to hold it off.
Lacking the strength and equipment necessary to fight a Goliath-level foe, A2 activated her limiter to increase her strength at the cost of slowly destroying her body. With her newfound strength, A2 was able to fight Goliath, but its size and strength left her unable to do much more than stop it. Fortunately, before A2 could be defeated, Pascal, the pilot of the lifeform machine Goliath 2B and 9S defeated in Nier: Automata Ver1.1a season 1, appeared to save A2 and abandoned pacifism to join the fight.
At the same time, 9S made a trek across the desert to the second sub-unit, which served as an information bank for the machine lifeforms. Hacking into it, 9S learned various secrets about the machine lifeforms, including, most shockingly, that YoRHa's robots and mechanical lifeforms are made up of the same core components.. 9S refuses to admit it, and when the unit's AI attempts to destroy his memories of 2B, 9S responds by stabbing it repeatedly until it dies, the episode ending on that sad note.
Nier: Automata Ver1.1a Episode 20 Marks the End of Comedy
In the joke ending of episode #20, the puppets of Pods 042 and 153 declare that they will stop production because 9S's mental condition is getting worse. The joke ending is often the only source of humor in an episode, so Nier: Automata Ver1.1a removes the comedic endings meaning every episode can be expected to be largely dark and serious from here on out. A large part of the ending joke is meant to provide metaphorical commentary on the possibility of a delayed DVD release, but it still serves as a statement of what to expect in the tone of the anime going forward.
Nier: Automata Ver1.1a Episode 20 Perfectly Balances Its Different Stories
Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode #20 covers the different stories of A2 and 9S, and both are great to watch unfold. As for A2's story, not only is there great action from both A2 and Pascal, but Nier: Automata Ver1.1a Episode #20 for A2 did a great job of highlighting the tragedy of Pascal's village through its amazing animation and direction.even setting a few scenes in limited color to emphasize that point. With this much content, it's easy to get people to love the character A2, even when the series is nearing its end.
As for 9S's story, although it's not as intense as A2's story, or even as intense as what he went through in episode #19, Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode #20 still does a great job of highlighting 9S's worsening mental state through his increasingly violent tone and attitude. His breakdown at the end of the episode is the perfect summary of that. Add to that the implications of 9S learning that androids and mechanical lifeforms share a common origin, and it's another great part of 9S's story and Nier: Automata Version 1.1ain general.
