Japanese parents often say reading manga makes you stupid — now Japanese children will enjoy comic art in music class
Textbooks, the obsession of every student in the world. But if there is a saving grace, it is the illustrations. Starting in April, students at Japanese elementary schools will find some new artwork in their music textbooks — drawn by Nichijou-My Ordinary Life author Keiichi Arawi.

Published on Arawi's X account (formerly Twitter) in April 2023, Arawi noted how he did the artwork for the new textbooks that went live in April 2024. Textbooks released by Kyoiku-Geijutsusha cover music classes from first to sixth grade.

It is expected to be used in primary schools from April 2024.
Thank you.
Although the Kyoiku-Geijutsusha homepage does not go into detail about Arawi's artwork, there is a section detailing the themes of each block cover. Starting in first grade, the theme is “Enjoy your first music class.” From there, the topics are “Enjoy listening to various sounds and music”, “Let's play while feeling the joy and beauty of music”, “Let's connect with music using digital devices”. digital”, “Enjoy the beauty of music with your eyes and ears”. ,” and in sixth grade, “Let's share our musical experiences.”
A video on the company's YouTube channel also showcased changes made to music textbooks, including eight characters seen throughout the teaching materials. Although it doesn't resemble the characters in Arawi's Nichijou-My Ordinary Life manga, you can definitely see his style in the designs.

This is not the first time a famous comic book author has drawn pictures as teaching materials. However, this is the first time, at least this writer, has ever heard of a manga author creating a textbook that could potentially be used by thousands of students in Japan. And surprisingly, Arawi's art style matches what you see in many other elementary school textbooks. Although we cannot purchase music textbooks, we can explore samples on the Kyoiku-Geijutsusha homepage. So if you want to see Arawi's work in your music textbooks, now's your chance.
