Official Haikyu!! Account X (formerly Twitter) revealed that Haikyu!! The film: The Decisive Battle at the Garbage Yard had a three-day box office opening of 2.23 billion yen ($14.86 million), opening at No. 1 in Japan. This is despite the film’s release on February 16, 2024 being a weekday.
Oricon compared these numbers, revealing that the opening box office of Haikyu!! made it one of the biggest Japanese titles of all time. Haikyu!! on par with One Piece Film: Red (2.2 billion yen) and right behind Jujutsu Kaisen 0 with 2.6 billion yen (~17.32 million USD).
Eiga Ratings News also ranked the opening as the fifth largest in Japanese history. Box office of Haikyu!! can also be compared to the recent film Spy x Family Code: White, which grossed 1.2 billion yen in its first three days of release. However, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train is still the leader with 4.6 billion yen (~30.66 million USD).
However, the original theater numbers for Code: White and Mugen Train were much higher, at 432 and 403 theaters respectively, while Toho’s official theater listings put the number for Decisive Battle at the Landfill at 373. theater.
Haikyu!! The film: The Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump was directed by Susumu Mitsunaka, who directed most of the four seasons of the anime television series. Production IG returned to animate the film. The film is the first of two film adaptations of the final episode of Haikyu!! story.
