The first official teaser trailer for the Netflix live-action adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi’s popular Shonen Jump series, Yu Yu Hakusho, is now available online.
On its official YouTube account, Netflix uploaded a sneak peek at the live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho in preparation for its December 14 release. The nearly two-minute trailer includes original story beats from the manga — such as Yusuke Urameshi realizing he was killed in a horrific traffic accident and is now a ghost — while also teasing new material made for the TV series . Perhaps the biggest change to the original manga plot is the early inclusion of the Toguro brothers, reminiscent of Arlong’s original introduction in Netflix’s live-action One Piece series.
The new trailer for Yu Yu Hakusho features the four main heroes: Takumi Kitamura as Yusuke Urameshi, Jun Shison as Kurama, Kanata Hongo as Hiei and Shuhei Uesugi as Kazuma Kuwabara. Previously, Netflix released promotional images of the main cast, teasing their superpower abilities before revealing close-up photos of them. While brief, Netflix’s teaser also shows glimpses of Kotone Furukawa as Botan, Sei Shiraishi as Keiko Yukimura, and Keita Machida as a teenage version of Koenma. The younger brother Toguro, played by Go Ayano, is seen at the end of the trailer trying to fight against Yusuke and his friends.
While comparisons between the upcoming Yu Yu Hakusho movie and the recently released live-action One Piece movie are inevitable, there are still significant differences between them. The live-action version of Yu Yu Hakusho produced by Japan is more similar to the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist trilogy or the 2018 Bleach movie than the Americanized version of Cowboy Bebop or Death Note. Shō Tsukikawa, director of the 2018 live-action film My Little Monster, is credited as series director for Yu Yu Hakusho, while Tatsurō Mishima and Yoshihiro Togashi are credited as writers. Robot Communications is producing the television series in partnership with Netflix.
The live-action Yu Yu Hakusho Netflix series will air worldwide on December 14. The original anime is available on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Tubi. Viz Media handles the English release of the manga.
