An independent filmmaker from Brazil has produced a short film based on Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, which is expected to be streamed later this month.
As detailed on BrasilNippou, director Chris Tex’s 16-minute film, The Wind Princess, had a free screening at the San Paulo Cultural Center on September 21 with more than 100 people in attendance. Although Tex is not affiliated with Hayao Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli, his film received near-unanimous acclaim for its faithful recreation of the opening scenes of Nausicaa. Now, Tex is making the film available to viewers outside his hometown; The Wind Princess will be available to watch on the director’s YouTube channel starting October 20.
A lifelong fan of Japanese animation, Tex has great respect for the medium, especially the works of Studio Ghibli. While his all-time favorite Ghibli film is Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa inspired Tex to take on the challenge of adapting Miyazaki’s work into live-action. “I wanted to try making a science fiction piece and I also wanted to be conscious of environmental issues, which is the theme of Nausicaa,” Tex explains. I sympathize with it.” Tex went to Japan to present his idea to Studio Ghibli but was unable to contact an official representative. Ultimately, Tex took on the film project without Ghibli’s support, filming most of the desert scenes in Southern Brazil on the Santa Catarina coast.
Released in 1984, Miyazaki’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is set on a post-apocalyptic Earth where most of humanity has been wiped out, with the remaining cults living among giant insects. giant is called “Ohm”. With much of the earth polluted, humanity’s only source of water comes from deep underground. Although the people of Nausicaa strive to live in harmony with nature, other sects use drastic measures to control the Ohm population and lay waste to a toxic forest that is quickly spreading across the planet. pure. After discovering details of a terrible plot to destroy Ohm, Nausicaa sets out to save her valley and stop the ongoing war between man and nature. The film’s success led to the founding of Studio Ghibli in June 1985.
Ahead of the film’s online premiere, Tex expressed gratitude to Studio Ghibli for inspiring him as a filmmaker. “If I could bring this work to you, I would like you to see it,” Tex said. “I [was] was very inspired by director Miyazaki when creating my work. He had a great influence on me; I want to express my gratitude to Director Miyazaki.” In addition to The Wind Princess, Tex’s filmography also includes the web drama Nerd of the Dead, starring Brazilian comedian Danilo Genchili.
The Wind Princess will be available on Tex’s YouTube channel starting October 20. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is available to stream on Max.
