One Piece stands out in the anime universe thanks to its uniquely designed characters, from ordinary humans to talking animals and robots. However, there are many characters whose initial sketches are not at all similar to what we know.
Such as the case of Nami. The design in the initial sketch of the Straw Hat crew’s navigator surprised fans, because it was very different from the actual image.
Looking at the image above, it can be seen that Nami was once imagined as a biological robot. As revealed by Eiichiro Oda, this initial design shows Nami having a metal body and using a giant ax as her weapon. But this idea was eventually dropped, perhaps to maintain a conventional female image in the eyes of people.
Luckily, the author changed the original design so we have a beautiful Nami with a perfect body like today. This change has certainly made her more attractive in the eyes of the audience.
Although not as strong and cool looking as the original design, with her current feminine appearance, Nami can still protect herself and fight alongside her teammates. Nami’s girlish appearance in particular has facilitated her presence in a number of fanarts, including the hyper-realistic works popular today.
Additionally, when One Piece was adapted into a live-action Netflix film, Nami’s appearance is now easier to bring to life, more in line with the tastes of fans and the anime industry.
