My Hero Academia's main story may be over, but the world it introduced lives on and spawns new and powerful Quirks in the spin-off series Team-Up Missions. This is a sure sign that fans of the series still have a lot to look forward to, even after the big battle between good and evil has ended.
My Hero Academia Team-Up Missions is a spin-off series by Yoco Akiyama that follows small groups of students from the main series as they go on “team-up” missions. These missions are typically light-hearted and fun, focusing on characters who don’t usually get much attention in the main series (though there’s plenty of focus on fan favorites like Deku and Bakugo). While it can be hard to pinpoint exactly when they take place between the events of the main series, it’s not really a crucial detail to enjoying the series.
One of the new chapters, released in English at the end of August, revealed some strange new Quirks, pushing the boundaries of what Quirks can do.
The quirky touches in My Hero Academia's modern art might be some of the series' strongest quirks.
Two Powerful New Quirks Could Be Unstoppable in the Wrong Hands
In Chapter 27 of Team-Up Missions, part of the recently released fifth volume of the manga, a strange, modern-art-inspired town is being terrorized by a group of villains who believe that destruction is the purest form of artistic expression. Deku, Bakugo, and Todoroki are sent along with Present Mic to help them deal with these villains, but the group is soon shocked when these villains use their Quirks for the first time. One uses a Quirk called “2D-ify,” turning Bakugo into a 2-dimensional image, while another uses Cubism to turn Deku into an abstract version of himself.
These Quirks are incredibly powerful for two relatively minor villains, being able to completely change someone into unnatural forms that leave them completely helpless. There is no indication of what the limitations of these Quirks might be, or whether they can target multiple opponents at once. The ability to change people at their base level seems to indicate that these are (or were close to being) reality-bending powers. Fortunately for Deku and Bakugo, this effect wore off after the villains were overpowered by Todoroki, suggesting that some level of concentration is required.
My Hero Academia's Team-Up Missions Are Still Expanding the Series' World After the End of the Main Manga
Spinoff series will continue in the near future
While these chapters were written and released in Japan before the main My Hero Academia manga ended in early August, there's no indication that Team-Up Missions will be ending anytime soon. Those looking for more My Hero Academia would do well to check out the series for themselves, as the mini-adventures are the perfect way to immerse yourself a little in everyone's favorite superhero manga. It's especially appealing to those who already enjoy My Hero Academia for the school elements rather than the plot, and wanted to know more about the daily life of students at UA.
Fans can check out My Hero Academia: Collaboration Quest on Viz's Shonen Jump app or by purchasing the latest volume (5) in paperback.
