With its manga almost over, My Hero Academy There’s still a big mystery surrounding Quirks that needs to be explained before the end. Author Kohei Horikoshi overall did a great job of wrapping up many of the series’ unfinished plot threads thus far in the Final War arc. But one topic they haven’t explored much is the mysteries surrounding how Quirks work and why they appear in the first place.
Most people in the world of My Hero Academia possess a Quirk, which is the name given to a superpower unique to each person. Much has been revealed about these Quirks throughout the series. For example, Quirks can be passed from generation to generation, leading some people to try to breed certain Quirks to their children. Additionally, there are three types of Quirks, Emitter, Transformation, and Mutation, which classify all known Quirks. There are even some extremely strange trivia surrounding these powers, such as the fact that some animals in My Hero Academia like UA High principal Nezu can also have Quirks, although this is very rare. But there is information about Quirks introduced in the first chapter that has never been presented in detail.
My Hero Academia needs to explain its toe mystery
In Chapter 1 of the series, a doctor explains that Deku cannot have a Quirk because his toe has an extra joint that all people with Quirks lack. This news completely devastated Deku and completely changed the trajectory of his life. However, it’s not really explained satisfactorily. The Doctor mentioned that being in the next stage of human evolution, humans had Quirks that didn’t need that extra joint and thus lost it. But that uniform evolutionary change on a societal scale would not be uniform as all Quirk bearers lack this articulation, especially since their individual powers vary widely.
This leads to broader questions about how Quirks are manifested in the first place. Evolution is an unpredictable process that manifests too slowly to truly explain the dramatic increase of Quirks across society. And the lack of uniformity in all Quirk users despite their very different abilities suggests that the origin of these powers may have a more artificial cause. Whether this means Quirks are created by a scientific process or, less likely but still possible, it is a magical ability is unclear. But what this toe mystery makes clear is that there’s more here than meets the eye.
Hopefully My Hero Academia will provide an answer to this toe mystery before it ends, but if not then maybe a potential spin-off will explain it. After all, a potential My Hero Academia sequel would certainly feature even wilder Quirks, which could prompt an in-depth exploration of their origins. While it’s not necessarily directly related to the Final War arc, My Hero Academy The mysteries surrounding Quirks should still be solved to bring fans a closer feeling.
