What happened in My Hero Academia Season 7, Episode 3?
The traitor to UA High has been exposed
In My Hero Academia season 7, episode #3, “Villain”, when everyone was training for the final battle against Shigaraki and All For One, Hagakure, noticed that Aoyama was not with them and noticed that he had recently How depressed she was, she went to find him to cheer him up. Hagakure came across Aoyama talking to his parents in the forest and in doing so, learned a shocking truth: Aoyama is the traitor who revealed information about UA to the League of Villains in the past.
Hagakure asked Izuku to listen with her, and it was further revealed that Aoyama, once born Quirkless, was forced to work for All For One as payment for receiving the Quirk. Aoyama, struggling with both guilt over the betrayal and a desperate desire to protect his parents, begins to attack Izuku, but Hagakure uses his Quirk to deflect Aoyama's attack, Hagakure's face was even briefly revealed for the first time. Hagakure then scolds Aoyama for putting everyone in danger, and while he is distracted, Izuku is able to restrain Aoyama and his parents.
Everyone sympathized with Aoyama and understood that he did not betray them out of malice, but that did not change the fact that he still committed a great crime. only adds more pressure to their situation. However, as they were learning the details of how Aoyama contacted All For One, Midoriya realized that Aoyama can help them lure All For One out so they can fight him on their termsmeaning Aoyama is, ironically, their best bet to defeat Shigaraki and All For One.
The traitor in My Hero Academia could not be anyone other than Aoyama
A years-long storyline has come to fruition
Aoyama was finally revealed as the traitor years after My Hero Academia seemingly dropped that plot thread, and in retrospect, it couldn't have been anyone else. Two other characters often labeled as traitors are Kaminari thanks to some suspicious actions and Hagakure because of his invisibility, the latter of which is even teased at the beginning of the episode. However, between the three of them, Aoyama is the only one who gets enough attention to make it clear that he's hiding somethingso it wouldn't make any sense if the other person was the traitor.
More than that, of course, it makes the most sense for Aoyama to become a traitor from a narrative perspective. Previous seasons contrasted Aoyama's cowardice and struggle with his Quirk with Izuku's determination and struggle with One For All, and that dichotomy was even reinforced when Aoyama talks about how knowing Izuku doesn't have the same powers as him only makes him feel more guilty for betraying everyone. Even before the reveal, Aoyama was someone who had a surprising amount of similarities to Izuku's personality, and it made him the most satisfied being a traitor more than anyone else.
My Hero Academia may be too late with Aoyama's big reveal
It's great that My Hero Academia's traitor subplot is finally over and that it's running a little longer. After its inclusion in season 3, the plot was barely mentioned for the next six years, and it now only appears in the final season of My Hero Academia, the reveal of Aoyama as the ultimate traitor doesn't have as much impact as it could have. A lot of that is probably due to other stories taking priority, but it's still a shame it couldn't have come out sooner.
That being said, the episode still manages to reveal a lot, even if it's oddly timed. Directing and voice acting from Aoyama, Izuku and Hagakuredid a great job selling the emotional impact of the traitor revealand overall, everything surrounding the reveal and everyone's reactions to it perfectly captured the emotional core of the series. My Hero Academy got everything it needed from its big reveal, and it'll be great to see how that plays out for the rest of Season 7.
