Mononoke: Karagasa is an upcoming film in the Mononoke franchise. The film was announced in July 2023 during the 15th anniversary of the original 2007 anime series as a commemoration of the milestone. Kenji Nakamura, director of the original 2007 anime, will return to direct the film with Twin Engine EOTA Studio (Hell's Paradise) animating the series. Hiroshi Kamiya will voice the main character, who is only known as a medicine seller.
The film takes place at the end of the Edo period and the Meiji period of Japan. It tells the story of a wandering, nameless character, known only as a drug dealer. The medicine seller travels around Japan, destroying spirits called Mononoke. However, he must first learn Mononoke's form, truth, and reason to kill them.
Mononoke is an anime series produced by Toei Animation. It is a spin-off of Toei Animation's 2006 horror anime series Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales. The series aired from July 2007 to September 2007 and inspired two manga adaptations. The first manga adaptation was published in Square Enix's Young Gangan magazine and ran from August 2007 to August 2008. The second manga adaptation, Mononoke: Umibozu, ran from September 2013 to November 2014 and published in Tokuma Shoten's Monthly Comic Zenon magazine. Both adaptations are illustrated by Ninagawa Yaeko.
Crunchyroll is streaming the original 2007 Mononoke series with both subtitles and an English dub.
