Lupin the Third: Part III 42
Lupin III Part 3 42
ルパン三世 – Part III Ep. 42
Summary/SPOILER Summary
Lupin disguises himself as Hassan, the Egyptian Minister of Culture. He takes Fujiko to a polo match in England where Count Bone and Lord Wave (Waib) are competing. Lupin explains how the two run a large insurance company but became rich by sinking oil tankers, passenger planes, and even shooting down an American space shuttle. Lupin's group travels to Egypt, where he reveals that he paid for the construction of a pyramid.
Fujiko takes on the role of a Tokyo University archaeology professor who created the discovery of King Gigglah's pyramid. After a press conference where Fujiko announces the discovery, with Lupin there as Hassan, Count Bone and Lord Wave appear. “Hassan” buys a £10 billion contract for the fake pyramid. He claims it's because Lupin will steal it. Zenigata appears, helping to prove that claim.
With Zenigata’s help, Bone and Wave have a small army to defend the pyramid. Lupin brings an airship but it is shot down. The incident causes Wave and Bone to become greedy, thinking they can sell a £100 billion contract. Meanwhile, Fujiko is with Hassan and Zenigata, who express doubts about the authenticity of the pyramid. Wave, Bone and “Hassan” arrive by helicopter. Zenigata is about to capture “Hassan” when Fujiko screams.
Zenigata finds “Lupin” and “Jigen” tied up and arrests them, even though “Lupin” claims to be Hassan. Meanwhile, “Hassan” pays £100 billion in cash for a £500 billion contract, backed by cash. That night, Jigen shoots the ceramic top off the pyramid, causing its ice core to melt and the pyramid to “disappear.” Lupin then makes the £500 billion in cash because the contract is now in his name.
Thoughts/Reviews
Yikes. Lupin the 3rd: Part III 42 requires the viewer to accept complete and utter nonsense that can easily happen. For starters, take the fake pyramid that Lupin built. I can believe that Lupin would have the money to do this. However, he needs the cooperation of the Egyptian government to do this. Indeed, he needs their support in every aspect of the plan. After all, Lupin is disguised as Director Hassan, a real person. And the real Hassan declares his belief that this fake pyramid is in fact real.
The next piece of garbage in the story is the British aristocracy and their insurance schemes. I have no idea how they got so rich after personally destroying things like oil tankers, jumbo jets, and space shuttles. In fact, their scheme should have put them in the poorhouse, since they would have had to pay policyholders a lot of money to cover their losses. Clearly, the writers of this episode knew absolutely nothing about insurance.
Then there’s the cash aspect of Lupin’s plan. Since Lupin had already made $500 million, I can believe he paid for the pyramid. But where did Lupin get the £100 billion in cash to pay for the insurance? What’s even more stupid is that Count Bone and Lord Wave backed the £500 billion in cash and sold it. What makes sense? In fact, nothing in this episode makes sense, and I feel even more stupid for having watched it.
Finally, how the hell did Zenigata not recognize Fujiko? Hell, she didn't even bother to change her name, so Zenigata should have known right away and arrested her. Not only that, the writers seem to understand how stupid their plot is. After all, they made Zenigata start asking questions but still act stupid.
Final thoughts and conclusions
Let me summarize my review of Lupin the Third: Part III 42 with some final thoughts.
The kid in me actually got a kick out of seeing Lupin do a silent but deadly fart in disguise. Things like the tanker sinking in the Strait of Hormuz and the jet being shot down were real things that had happened when this episode aired. The space shuttle explosion hadn’t happened yet. But strangely enough, a year later, the space shuttle Challenger exploded.
Final, Lupin the 3rd: Part III 42 is a story where nothing can logically happen thanks to all the stupid nonsense played out as a plot.
