Lupin the Third: Part III 38
Lupin III Part 3 38
ルパン三世 – Part III Ep. 38
Summary/SPOILER Summary
In Denmark, Goemon is arrested and imprisoned for allegedly cutting off the hand of the Little Mermaid statue. However, it is a plot by the Copenhagen Tourist Board Director (Norman) to have Lupin retrieve the arm from a sunken ship. Norman is embarrassed that a tourist initially stole the arm. Lupin hires a female dolphin named Leticia. She is equipped with a microphone and camera, and can “talk” to Lupin through other technology.
While Lupin continues his search, Goemon is rotting in prison. Zenigata believes that Lupin will capture Goemon, so he sets up camp near the prison. Fujiko arrives on a sailboat and offers to help. She tries to seduce him, but the jealous Leticia gets in the way. The dolphin finds the arm while Zenigata becomes suspicious and demands to see Goemon. In the prison, Norman's assistant, Walace, pretends to help Zenigata, but instead helps Goemon escape.
Norman returns Goemon to Lupin. However, Lupin thinks there is something else in the arm. Fujiko arrives on a glider and steals it. Worse, the natto given by Goemon contains a bomb that blows up Lupin's boat. She meets Wallace, who reveals that the Mermaid's Heart jewel is in the arm. Leticia relays this information to Lupin. She attacks, but Wallace has a heavy bullet in his revolver and traps the dolphin.
At an aquarium, Wallace attacks Fujiko. However, Norman arrives and wants to get in on the action. Lupin, through Leticia, makes his presence known. Lupin, Goemon, and Jigen steal the jewel and free Leticia. However, when they reach the ocean, Zenigata is waiting. Lupin agrees to marry Leticia in exchange for her help with Zenigata. Fujiko steals the diamond again on a jet ski. Leticia seduces Lupin into marrying him.
Thoughts/Reviews
I have to believe that the authors of Lupin the Third: Part III 38 said, “We will write nonsense, no matter how stupid it is, just because we can.” Right outside the gate, Goemon's illogical rail and the public sentiment against him were meaningless. Aside from Goemon's sword, there was no evidence that he had cut off the statue's arm.
Also, his capture was stupid. They randomly installed a special cage in the ceiling of a Japanese restaurant just to capture him? What? And then the cage containing Goemon was thrown into a hole in the prison. Again, what the hell? At this point, I had already watched the entire episode.
We later found out that making Goemon the scapegoat was just to get Lupin involved in a salvage operation to retrieve said arm from a sunken ship. Even if Norman wanted to officially avoid the shame of losing his arm, you wouldn't ask a thief to retrieve the arm. You'd ask salvage experts to do it. However, considering Norman is a corrupt government official, maybe that makes sense. 🙄
Finally, there’s the whole dolphin part of the story. First, how does Lupin convince a marine park to “lend” him a dolphin to get his arm back? And conveniently, Lupin and Dolphin can communicate. Not only that, but the dolphin wants to marry Lupin. What a headache.
Final thoughts and conclusions
Let me summarize my review of Lupin the Third: Part III 38 with some final thoughts.
I'm so sick of Fujiko constantly betraying Lupin's plot elements. What's worse is that Lupin is stupid enough to be fooled by this so many times. It would be more interesting if Lupin played Fujiko by playing along. Zenigata's role here is just a forced requirement for him in the episode. He does smart things, but in the end, it's pointless. How can a revolver shoot a large, heavy net to trap a dolphin? 🙄
Final Lupin the Third: Part III 38 made me lose IQ points for being so stupid.
