The film will premiere in Japan on May 31. The film tells an original story set 10 years after the middle school setting of the original manga. Mei Nagano (live-action My Broken Mariko, Ni no Kuni, Peach Girl, Burn the House Down) plays Takagi, currently a trainee teacher at her old school, while Fumiya Takahashi (Kamen Rider Zero-One) plays as Nishikata, currently a gym instructor at the same school.
Yōsuke Eguchi takes on the role of Mr. Tanabe, Takagi and Nishikata’s former middle school homeroom teacher, who is now the vice principal in the film. Eguchi is the only cast member returning from the previous television series. Takagi’s classmate was also selected. Jin Suzuki plays Nakai, Yūna Taira plays Mano, Oshirō Maeda plays Hamaguchi, and Sara Shida plays Hojo.
The manga is also inspiring a live-action series adaptation, which will premiere Tuesday, March 26 on the channel’s TBS Drama Stream programming block, at 24:58 (actually at 12:00 p.m.) 58 a.m. Wednesday at 12:58 a.m. JST). An international release is planned. The film will air on Netflix every Tuesday.
Rikiya Imaizumi (live-action Hōzuki-san Chi no Aneki, Chihiro-san, Just Only Love) will direct both the live-action series and the film adaptation. Like the live-action series, Imaizumi also co-wrote the script with Tomoki Kanazawa (Sanctuary, Sabakan) and Jun Hagimori (Sabakan). Takashi Ohmama (Dances with the Dragons, Mobile Suit gundam: The Witch From Mercury, The Gene of AI) is composing the music. Both adaptations were filmed entirely on Kagawa Prefecture’s Shōdo Island, the setting of the previous anime adaptation.
